Like Malkin, Mikhnov filed a letter of resignation to his Russian Super League team, Yaroslavl, earlier this summer. Strike three for the Edmonton Oilers defense. Stung by the departure of both Chris Pronger and Jaroslav Spacek, the Oilers have now lost a third blue-liner from last season's squad which reached the Stanley Cup final. Dick Tarnstrom has decided to play in Europe, signing with Lugano in the Swiss Elite League. He wavered. He waffled. But in the end, Phil Kessel considered he could leave college behind, earn six figures in 2006-07, and possibly skate into an opening on one of the Bruins' top two lines, and the 18-year-old forward couldn't turn down Boston's offer. They accomplished that Thursday, working a deal with Anaheim to land bruiser Vitaly Vishnevski, a 6-foot-2, 206-pound defenseman who came at the right price. The Thrashers now have nine defensemen with legitimate shots to make the team. GM Don Waddell said he was not ready to dump any of them, though he'd listen to offers if teams came calling. And Markus Naslund struggled for two months last season with his skating and shooting because of groin/hip flexor ailments. The Canucks reconfirmed Thursday they have re-signed defenseman Kevin Bieksa, nearly two weeks after The Sun reported the 25-year-old had reached a deal worth $1.05 million (US) over two years. Bieksa played in 39 games last season, compiling six assists and 77 penalty minutes. The Canucks also re-signed utility forward Tyler Bouck Thursday. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
