Mayfield said he also expects to test for Bill Davis Racing and Toyota for the rest of the season. In the race to qualify for NASCAR's title run, there are no magic numbers. But there is plenty of numerology, and the math says that of the nine drivers fighting for entry to the Chase for the Nextel Cup, five seem in solid position. According to Stats LLC, there are 725,760 possibilities for the top 11, including a scenario in which more than 10 make the Chase for the first time. MB2 Motorsports announced that Richard "Slugger" Labbe has taken over the crew chief duties on an interim basis for the No. 14 Chevy driven by Sterling Marlin. Labbe replaces Scott Eggelston, who has mutually parted ways with MB2. Labbe's first Nextel Cup race with the No. 14 entry will be this weekend at the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 in Richmond. MB2 hired Labbe two weeks ago when the veteran crew chief became available to the organization. His specific role with MB2 will be announced at a later date. A.J. Allmendinger, the only American driving on the Champ Car World Series circuit, will drive in the NASCAR Truck Series for Bill Davis Racing at New Hampshire on Sept. 16 and Talladega, Ala., on Oct. 7. NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said Tuesday that Allmendinger submitted a resume requesting permission to be allowed to run at Talladega, and that based on his driving experience and qualifications, Allmendinger has been cleared to compete at all tracks in the Truck series. Casey Atwood, the driver of the No. 27 car when Brewco Motorsports expanded to a two-car Busch Series team in 1999, will be back in that car Friday for the Emerson 250 at Richmond International Raceway. Atwood, who had two wins for the team, supplants former series champion David Green. Robby Gordon plans to compete in the Dakar Rally, a 6,000-mile, 17-day journey from Lisbon, Portugal, to Dakar, Senegal, scheduled to begin Jan. 6. Gordon, who owns and drives the No. 7 Chevrolets in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, has won two stages in the race, making him the only U.S. stage-winner in the annual event. Ted Musgrave returns to the No. 14 FitzBradshaw Racing Dodge this weekend at Richmond. Musgrave will be making his second appearance for the team in the NASCAR Busch Series. In 26 starts in all series at Richmond, he has led 336 laps with five top-five and 10 top-10 finishes. He has one victory at the track, and that came in the September 2004 Craftsman Truck Series race. ARCA driver Josh Krug will attempt to make his Busch Series debut this weekend in the Emerson Radio 250 at Richmond. Veteran crew chief Billy Wilburn, who most recently was with Clay Andrews Racing, will guide the Vision Racing team for the 20-year-old Krug. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
