The Toronto Sun has learned that a deal to sell CASCAR -- Canada's top stock car racing series -- to the France family business that is NASCAR will be made official at a news conference today in Toronto and that Canadian Tire has signed on as the title sponsor. Sam Hornish said he has yet to discuss with Team Penske plans for testing ARCA or Busch Series cars this fall. But he sounded very much committed to open-wheel racing. Kurt Busch's attempted image makeover from snippy villain to beer-drinkin' party boy is still drawing mixed reviews, judging by the applause and jeering Thursday night when he introduced the Black Crowes before a free concert. Chase Miller, 19, from Canton, Ga., will attempt to make his NASCAR Truck Series debut this weekend driving the No. 4 Dodge owned by Bobby Hamilton Racing. He will replace Timothy Peters in the truck at New Hampshire International Speedway and again the following week at Las Vegas. Paul Andrews, who won the 1992 Winston Cup championship as crew chief for Alan Kulwicki, will move from Kyle Petty's team to take over as crew chief for Bobby Labonte in the No. 43 Dodges, effective immediately. Bill Wilburn has been hired to take over as crew chief on Petty's cars. Greg Steadman, who had been interim crew chief for Labonte, will return to his position as director of competition. Clint Bowyer has been tapped to drive the No. 46 SKF Chevrolet Silverado fielded by Morgan-Dollar Motorsports (MDM) in the New Hampshire 200 for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Bowyer will again take the wheel of the No. 46 Silverado in the Silverado 350 at Texas Motor Speedway on November 3, 2006. Arena Racing USA will open its inaugural season in Charlotte on Oct. 11 at Cricket Arena with Nextel Cup drivers Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and J.J. Yeley scheduled to participate in the debut race. Dreams of bringing the loud engines of a NASCAR superspeedway to the Denver area quietly are taking hold in Commerce City. City officials said Monday agents for International Speedway Corp. are trying to piece together a land deal that could place the racetrack complex west of Denver International Airport, around 96th Avenue and E-470. The plans still are in preliminary stages and nothing official has been submitted to the city's planning department. Orleans Racing driver Brendan Gaughan's Craftsman Truck Series entry will carry the blue and gray colors of Georgetown University for Saturday's Craftsman Truck Series at New Hampshire. Gaughan graduated from Georgetown, and his race team left its Las Vegas base for New Hampshire a little early to take in last Saturday's football game against Stony Brook University from the sidelines.
