There is a belief in the garage that the Chase was introduced because of Matt Kenseth's 2003 championship, which the No. 17 driver claimed despite winning only one race. NASCAR executives, however, are quick to dispel that notion. In the years prior to the Chase, television ratings dipped around this time of year. There were usually two reasons: (1) the points leader was so far ahead that the championship was a given; (2) football season is beginning.

NASCAR has been studying race results from the last 10 seasons, determining how a tweak here and there -- giving race winners extra points ranging from 5 to 50 -- would have affected previous championships. NASCAR officials have calculated a championship scenario involving race track data from 2005 and 2006 that puts Mark Martin at the top of the list in the Chase For The Nextel Cup. NASCAR summarized how each driver has done at the remaining tracks, factoring in such things as average start, average position and percentage of laps led. According to the news release announcing Grubb's suspension, NASCAR suspended Grubb this time for "his refusal to submit to required testing." NASCAR's policy provides for testing if there is "reasonable suspicion" someone is using a banned substance.

Homestead-Miami Speedway will add 4,400 temporary seats to accommodate unprecedented ticket demand for the sold-out Ford 400 on Nov. 19. Speedway president Curtis Gray said the additional tickets go on sale Saturday. Adding more permanent seating is under consideration, Gray said, but probably wouldn't be built until at least 2008.

Gulf Coast Entertainment announced plans to construct a major motorsports and entertainment park in southern Alabama. The investor group has narrowed its site choices to a location in Mobile County in the area across from the University of Mobile and two potential sites in adjacent Baldwin County. The project - which is to include an asphalt speedway, a road course, a drag strip and a dirt track - will be named "Alabama Motorsports Park, A Dale Earnhardt Jr. Speedway."

Record revenue and stumbling projects in Seattle and New York could prompt International Speedway Corporation to accelerate its pursuit of building a Denver-area racetrack. ISC previously tried to build a Denver- area track, only to see plans fall apart in Aurora and Arapahoe County because of political or public uproar. In addition, Penske Motorsports previously failed to build in Adams County in the late 1990s.
