Toni Kukoc met recently with Bulls general manager John Paxson and was told the door is not completely shut on a return. But the Bulls have 14 players under contract and would prefer to add a veteran big man with the last roster spot. Kukoc, who turns 38 next week, wants to extend his 13-year NBA career and says he has multiple offers to play next season. But he only wants to play for the Bulls or the Milwaukee Bucks, the teams closest to his Highland Park home.

That means one of the bench kids must arise in GM Ed Stefanski's view.

Word in Detroit is that the Pistons will part with assistant Don Zierden.

Bobcats coach-general manager Bernie Bickerstaff likes Argentine forward Walter Herrmann's shooting and ability to create offense in half-court situations. Those were weaknesses, particularly late in games, for the Bobcats last season.

The Wizards promoted Tommy Sheppard to vice president of basketball administration and Milt Newton to vice president of player personnel yesterday. Since Sheppard and Newton joined the organization in 2003, the franchise has advanced to the NBA playoffs twice, winning a playoff series for the first time in 23 years and making back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time in 18 years.
