Jake Plummer knows the score. He is a dead quarterback walking. The Broncos won Sunday. But anyone who saw Plummer in the locker room felt the discomfort of standing in the presence of a beaten man. Giving Jay Cutler a shot to play this season is not as big a risk as sticking with a rattled 31-year-old quarterback in danger of tripping every time he walks to the line of scrimmage. Speculation is the Chargers and Titans have agreed to a trade for Tennessee quarterback Billy Volek, but it was delayed until after the teams played in San Diego. Oakland receiver Jerry Porter, healthy and ready to play, was on the inactive list for the second week in a row and his relations with coach Art Shell are beyond the breaking point. Some Raiders players weren't as diplomatic on the benching of the disgruntled Porter, who has demanded a trade. The asking price for Jerry Porter originally was a pair of first-round picks -- clearly Al Davis wasn't prepared to move his unhappy receiver. But latest reports say he's yours for a No. 1. Maybe less. A time frame for Terrell Owens' return will be determined following surgery, but he is expected to be sidelined two to four weeks. The Cowboys have a bye Sunday before playing at Tennessee on Oct. 1. Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said it is unclear how the soon Clinton Portis will be able to return. Gibbs said the soreness is unrelated to Portis's original injury and the problem is in the back of his left shoulder. Bengals running back Rudi Johnson cut the Doritos, the cheese steaks and the pizzas from his diet this offseason and focused on getting into the best shape of his life. Two games into his sixth season with the Bengals, the early results show the extra effort was worth a little sacrifice. The Eagles probably will find out today whether they suffered some losses that could have a more lingering, long-term impact on their season than yesterday's disturbing overtime loss to the Giants. Coach Andy Reid said that defensive end Jevon Kearse and cornerback Rod Hood are scheduled for MRI examinations today to determine the severity of the injuries. The Broncos are likely to sign kick returner-receiver Quincy Morgan today. With misses of 30, 36 and a blocked attempt from 30 yards, Michael Koenen's day as the Falcons' triple-threat field goal kicker, punter and kickoff specialist might be numbered. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
