Miguel Tejada said he would do his part in trying to build a championship team by speaking to soon-to-be free agent Alfonso Soriano, who shares the same representation, about playing in Baltimore. The Nationals will be involved in the discussion and may be willing to spend the money to keep Alfonso Soriano in town. If not, expect several 'big-market' teams to made serious offers. Look for the New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels and Chicago Cubs, among others, to be in the mix. Adding to the likelihood that Roger Clemens indeed will retire was virtually all his family convening in his suite and in the stands to watch. Included was Clemens' eldest brother, Richard, who flew all night from the Middle East, where he works, to watch. The Boston Globe reported the Cubs, Baltimore, Texas and Detroit are interested in the services of free-agent-to-be Luis Gonzalez. Before Sunday's road finale against the Phillies, Florida manager Joe Girardi reiterated he has no intention of quitting his first managerial job. However fractured his relationship with the front office, the fact remains Girardi has two years left on his deal and likely wouldn't be willing to forfeit a seven-figure sum. A more probable outcome is the two sides agreeing to a buyout. If Joe Girardi is fired next Sunday and Dusty Baker and the Cubs part ways, Girardi is likely to get an interview from the Cubs, though Lou Piniella remains high on the Cubs' wish list, according to sources. Florida also is believed to have an interest in Jim Fregosi, who could figure in a Cubs search. Currently a special assistant in Atlanta, the guy who took Philadelphia to the World Series in 1993 wants to manage again and is well regarded by Chicago GM Jim Hendry's staff. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
