Nextel Cup teams will be allowed to test their cars at Daytona, Las Vegas, Bristol, Richmond, Charlotte, Dover and Talladega in 2007. NASCAR announced its testing dates on Monday, beginning with the schedule for "Preseason Thunder" at Daytona. Cup teams will test Jan. 8-10 and Jan 15-17. The preseason Las Vegas "test in the West" is scheduled for Jan. 29-30.

It looks like more trouble for the France family's International Speedway Corp. in its New York Speedway plans. The ISC has reportedly lost its state permits to haul fill dirt to the Staten Island track site after questions were raised during an inspection of the soil being brought in.

Hopes that Juan Pablo Montoya would begin his stock-car racing career at Kansas Speedway have apparently ended. There just wasn't enough time to get Montoya ready for the coming weekend of racing at Kansas. Montoya spent Monday testing ARCA cars for team owner Chip Ganassi at Talladega Superspeedway. He will also practice in ARCA cars Friday at the new Iowa Speedway, which means he will not be able to participate in Busch series practice at Kansas that day.

Juan Pablo Montoya ran laps at Talladega in a Chip Ganassi Racing Dodge Charger as Ganassi, crew chief Donnie Wingo and much of the Ganassi hierarchy looked on. Although official speeds were not released, team members said Montoya ran laps in the 187-mile-per-hour range.

Bobby Labonte will drive the No. 77 Busch Series Chevrolets owned by Kevin Harvick Inc. in the remaining companion events with Nextel Cup races for the remainder of the 2006 season. That leaves Burney Lamar, who has driven the No. 77 in 28 of the season's 29 races to date, in the car for only the season's final stand-alone Busch race at Memphis.

Joe Gibbs Racing vice president Steve deSouza said Tampa product Aric Almirola, 22, will not take over the team's No. 20 Chevrolet in the Busch Series next year, but will run another full truck series slate with Spears Racing and contest at least 15 Busch events in another JGR car.

Twenty-five years after they first became one of the most dominating duos in NASCAR history, Bill Elliott and the Melling family will reunite in the Nextel Cup Series Banquet 400 presented by ConAgra Foods at the Kansas Speedway. The car will feature a retro red and white paint scheme from Bills first year driving with Melling funding in 1982.
