Whispers are that Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley has asked Jerry West if he would join him if Heisley makes a bid for the Milwaukee Bucks, who could be for sale again in the next few years. The Grizzlies' sale is currently pending to a group led by former Duke roommates Brian Davis and Christian Laettner, and West's fate is uncertain. It's beginning to look as if Kirk Hinrich will not get his contract extension this fall and will become a restricted free agent after the season. That's not very risky for the Bulls because they can match any offer. The problem for the Bulls is that Andres Nocioni's contract expires after this season, plus Ben Gordon and Luol Deng are eligible for extensions. Isiah Thomas has ultimate authority over Knicks personnel decisions, but Glen Grunwald can initiate trade talks on his own. And the key for Thomas is that, unlike the way it was with Larry Brown, he completely trusts Grunwald. Josh Howard can't help but notice who's signed and who's signed for what. And he can't help but wonder why he isn't. If a deal isn't done by the league's Oct. 31 deadline, Howard is prepared to test the market next summer, albeit as a restricted free agent. Liking Shane Battier at the four, even playing him there, does not mean he will play power forward exclusively. But it is a strong indication Battier will see significant time at power forward with the Rockets, rather than his customary spot at small forward. Spurs coach Greg Popovich, who had high hopes Beno Udrih would become a dependable backup to Tony Parker this season, now lists him as the team's fourth point guard. In spite of Popovich's frustration, it would be a shock to see the Spurs decline Udrih's option. At $1.75 million, it's cost-effective. And if the Spurs decide to trade Udrih, he'll have more value if he's not going on the free-agent market at the end of the season. Bucks center Andrew Bogut had to leave the team's intrasquad scrimmage with a lower left leg contusion on Saturday, but the injury was not thought to be serious. Bogut was in obvious pain and had to limp off the court in the third quarter of the scrimmage. Hornets GM Jeff Bower has been involved in discussions with forward David West's agent, Lance Young, to finalize a contract extension. If possible, Bower wants to get West locked up now for the next three to four seasons to avoid getting into a bidding war. Bulls coach Scott Skiles spent some of the first week of training camp giving free-throw pointers to center Ben Wallace. Skiles -- who made 88.9 percent of his career free throws, fourth-best in league history -- downplayed the work he and Wallace had done. Skiles did acknowledge that he and his staff had studied video of Wallace's work from the line with the Pistons. While Al Jefferson's right ankle has been surgically repaired and is apparently OK, the Celtics' third-year power forward still hasn't quite forgiven or forgotten those who did not believe him. Jefferson said that list of nonbelievers included everyone in the Celtics organization, with one exception: Danny Ainge. Delonte West participated in all but the last scrimmage at practice and looked comfortable running. But it is uncertain whether he will participate in the first preseason game tomorrow at Cleveland. Doc Rivers cautioned that West's back might tighten up overnight and said the team would proceed cautiously, considering West day-to-day for a while. The Pistons plan to pick up contract options before the Oct. 31 deadline on Jason Maxiell and Carlos Delfino. Nuggets vice president of player personnel Rex Chapman said Courtney Alexander's signing has no bearing on free-agent swingman DerMarr Johnson's situation. Some apprehension might have been felt by 76ers coaches and players before they left Philadelphia for their 12-day European training-camp adventure. But as the Sixers left Barcelona, Spain, yesterday and flew here, the prevailing thought was that the trip has been beneficial to draw the players closer together after a season when the team was not always on the same page, practically and emotionally. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
