Penn State officials said that quarterbacks Anthony Morelli and Daryll Clark, both of whom suffered mild concussions in last week's loss to Michigan, had been cleared by the medical staff. Morelli is expected to start against Illinois. Florida State will wear a different uniform against Boston College tomorrow -- all black, which is part of a deal FSU has with Nike. Ohio State plans to send out postcards the second week of November reinforcing OSU's tie with the Heisman Trophy and its six previous winners (including Archie Griffin, a two-time winner). The card does not include a picture or any mention of quarterback Troy Smith, considered the front-runner. Miami president Donna Shalala and Florida International president Mitch Maidique met Thursday morning to discuss the future of the football series between their schools, but did not come to a decision about whether to play next year's scheduled game. Texas Longhorns defensive co-coordinator Duane Akina said that senior cornerback Tarell Brown and junior safety Marcus Griffin will play Saturday at Nebraska. Florida coach Urban Meyer used to dislike the new NCAA clock rules. Now he loathes them. The Gators had just 45 offensive plays to work with against Auburn, the fewest of Meyer's coaching career. Florida State linebacker Geno Hayes and defensive tackle Alex Boston missed a fourth consecutive day of practice Thursday and are doubtful for Saturday's game against No. 22 Boston College. Tight end Brandon Warren was able to participate minimally Thursday, but also is doubtful. On Thursday, Washington coach Tyrone Willingham indicated he is still wrestling with the decision of who will be behind Carl Bonnell, the quarterback who's starting for injured Isaiah Stanback. There were some indications that Jake Locker has emerged as the backup, however. UCLA freshman wide receiver Terrence Austin did not practice Wednesday because of a hamstring injury and is unlikely to play Saturday. Marcus Everett and Ryan Graves will return punts in place of Austin, who initially suffered his injury against Arizona. Fewer plays in college football mean fewer chances for more than one tailback. At Arizona State that's resulted in the virtual disappearance of Keegan Herring, who rushed for a school freshman record 870 yards last year but now is on pace for half of that. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
