It's possible that Sunday's parade was Jim Edmonds' final public appearance as a Cardinal. There is a $10-million option hanging there for the Cardinals to exercise. Tony La Russa said he and the front office have discussed what to do, but no conclusion has been reached. The White Sox could take a shot at Rangers shortstop Michael Young as part of a major deal. Young can become a free agent after 2007, and the Sox could elect to take a run at him then. The Sox have thoroughly scouted Texas pitching prospects Edison Volquez, John Danks, Thomas Diamond, Nick Masset and Eric Hurley, and preliminary talks last November broke down when the Rangers were unwilling to part with Danks or Diamond in a multiplayer trade. Insiders believe Barry Zito will flirt with the East Coast teams, but eventually will stay on the West Coast. The Dodgers are the leading contenders. Luis Gonzalez was a free agent for only hours Saturday before San Francisco and Texas came calling, major league sources confirmed Sunday, becoming the first two teams to initiate contact with Gonzalez in what could blossom into a bullish market for his services. In the coming months the Phillies will be trying hard to trade Pat Burrell while making a run at Alfonso Soriano and Gary Sheffield. League sources indicated that the Phillies are intrigued by Miguel Batista, the 35-year-old righthander who went 11-8 in 33 starts with the Diamondbacks last season after pitching exclusively in relief for the Blue Jays in 2005 If anyone thought Jeff Suppan would obligingly give the Cardinals a 'home team discount,' the 31-year-old veteran of five organizations suggested otherwise Sunday. 1 of 2 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
