New Flyers GM Paul Holmgren is said to be looking to make a blockbuster trade to shake things up, with winger Simon Gagne's name being floated as possible bait. It's believed the Blackhawks have offered the Flyers defenseman Jassen Cullimore, who according to a report in the Ottawa Sun also has been shopped to the Bruins. One of the biggest losses for the Coyotes has been that of assistant coach Rich Tocchet, who served as head coach Wayne Gretzky's right-hand last season. The Coyotes are working to have Tocchet reinstated and are hopeful that they can get him back this season. And although he wouldn't be on the bench during games, Tocchet would serve his role as assistant coach on the ice during practices, where he is most valuable, and up in the booth during games. Phoenix and San Jose were close to striking a deal in which the Coyotes would have acquired goaltender Evgeni Nabokov in exchange for a package featuring defenseman Nick Boynton, but talks broke down late in the week, The Post has learned. In the market for a center to replace injured Steven Reinprecht, the Coyotes are close to signing veteran free agent Yanic Perreault to a one-year contract, multiple team sources said Saturday. The Bruins aren't happy with their goaltending. You can bet they're looking at Vesa Toskala in San Jose, but there's no way the Sharks would want Glen Murray when they've got Jonathan Cheechoo as Joe Thornton's triggerman. Maple Leafs coach Paul Maurice nipped any potential goaltending controversy in the bud yesterday when he announced that Andrew Raycroft would start against the Thrashers at home tonight. Maurice gave himself a tiny window to change his mind tonight due to any unforeseen circumstances, but strongly hinted at splitting up Raycroft and Jean-Sebastien Aubin in the back-to-back games in Tampa Bay and Florida later this week. We keep hearing Ken Hitchcock could end up in Florida, where Jacques Martin is handling both coach and general manager duties. Former Flyers captain Dave Poulin paid a rare visit, fueling rumors he might return to the organization as a general manager. Kings GM Dean Lombardi said he was unwilling to rush into a trade to solve any of those problems, though trading center Craig Conroy has been discussed with teams and other Kings are believed to be available. Sharks coach Ron Wilson juggled his forward line combinations during a back-to-fundamentals, hard 60-minute skate Saturday. Wilson basically kept his top-six forwards intact, assigning Mark Bell from the Joe Thornton line to play alongside captain Patrick Marleau and his right wing Steve Bernier, while left wing Milan Michalek takes Bell's spot next to Thornton and Jonathan Cheechoo. If the Penguins opt to keep Jordan Staal -- they plan to let him know tomorrow -- they still could return him to his Ontario Hockey League club in Peterborough before he plays in his 40th game to avoid triggering his seven-year clock for qualifying for unrestricted free agency. Steve Ott, who fractured his lower fibula at the ankle Saturday night in a 3-2 win over the Kings, is expected to be out eight weeks and could miss the next 22 games. Stars coach Dave Tippett said he will choose between Mathias Tjarnqvist and Patrik Stefan as a replacement for Ott. Ducks left wing Todd Fedoruk will be out of action indefinitely after his right cheekbone was broken during his fight Friday night with Minnesota enforcer Derek Boogaard. Milan Hejduk is heating up, and that should be a good sign for the Avalanche. The former 50-goal scorer struck for two goals Sunday night, his second two-goal performance in the past three games. Darryl Sutter says he doesn't miss coaching, isn't concerned about new coach Jim Playfair, nor is he worried about his team's slow start and inability to score. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
