Texas freshman backup QB Jevan Snead, rumored on Texas fan Web sites to be exploring schools where he could transfer, would do nothing to be a distraction with the run the 8-1 Longhorns are on, his high school coach said Thursday. Schools mentioned as possibilities for Snead include Florida, Florida State, TCU, Houston and UT-El Paso. Texas Tech men's basketball coach Bob Knight took a few shots at former Chancellor David Smith during a Thursday luncheon. There was little love lost between Knight and Smith when both were on campus. The pair famously traded some angry words at a Lubbock lunch spot in February 2004, arguing in hushed tones near a salad bar before the coach loudly berated Smith and called him a liar. In the aftermath of an upset loss at Oregon State, meetings remained all the rage at USC on Thursday. Tailback Chauncey Washington said he was summoned to Athletic Director Mike Garrett's office. "He said we need more leaders out there, that I have to become a leader and get the team going," Washington said. Injured USC fullback Ryan Powdrell is bound for the NFL. The fifth-year senior, who dislocated and broke his right ankle in the second game against Nebraska, said USC officials informed him that a successful appeal to the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility was highly unlikely. Junior Chris Markey is still UCLA's No. 1 running back, but his role as the team's every-down back has definitely changed. Although regular backup Kahlil Bell is still hobbled because of an ankle injury, Coach Karl Dorrell said UCLA would continue to use a running back rotation against No. 10 California on Saturday. Another name to watch in Michigan State's search for a coach: Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Pat Shurmur, a former Michigan State assistant (1988-97) and all-Big Ten center for the Spartans. Three of the seven lost Ohio State fumbles have come in 82 carries by freshman power back Chris Wells. If the freshman loses the ball again, all that might be left for the Buckeyes to do is keep Wells, who's gained 391 yards and scored four touchdowns, on the bench for longer stretches. The coaches aren't at that point yet. Mark Richt has made no secret that his 2007 offensive line could be headed for trouble. The Georgia coach also has said he prefers to recruit high school players over junior college players. Georgia is heavily involved in the recruiting of Georgia Military College offensive lineman Vince Vance and Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College offensive lineman Joe Baels. Derrick Morgan tested the waters before Georgia Tech hooked its biggest recruit of the year. This whopper teased some storied anglers, too. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive end from Coatesville, Pa., ranked the No. 90 overall player in the nation by Rivals.com, on Thursday became the highest-rated player to make a commitment to the Yellow Jackets after visiting top-ranked Ohio State, Miami, Penn State and Boston College. Florida Coach Urban Meyer finally is ready to make a kicking change -- or is he? ''We're going to [wait] 'til game day,'' said Meyer, who will decide among Chris Hetland, Eric Nappy and Jonathan Phillips.`` A week after saying he fully expected Ryan Moore to play against Virginia Tech, Miami coach Larry Coker gave a vague response Thursday when asked if the suspended receiver would play Saturday night. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
