Two points undercut Beckenbauer's mercenary argument. First, as a player, he twice left Germany to sign lucrative contracts with the Cosmos of the North American Soccer League. Second, Beckenbauer is president of Bayern Munich, which has 14 foreign players on its 27-man roster.
