Scott Boras already is trying sell Barry Zito as a No.1 - i.e. $14 million per year - and while neither the Mets nor the Yankees see him that way, somebody else did. Someone say Texas' Tom Hicks most surely will.
-- New York Daily News

The feeling at the GM Meetings was that Scott Boras would now try to bypass Brian Cashman and get directly to George Steinbrenner to see if he will, indeed, overreact and pay big for Barry Zito. The Yanks would rather go short-term and pay heavy for a pitcher they like, notably Andy Pettitte if he decides to keep playing, or perhaps Roger Clemens.
-- New York Post

The Mets yesterday actively moved on their key issue - the rotation - by all but completing a deal to retain Orlando Hernandez while beginning to make inroads in the pursuit of Barry Zito and Vicente Padilla.
-- New York Post

The Mets already have had conversations in recent days with the White Sox about acquiring one of their starting pitchers -- likely either Javier Vazquez or Freddy Garcia -- and they are paying attention in case the Marlins put Dontrelle Willis on the market or the Padres do the same with Jake Peavy.
-- Newark Star-Ledger

Angels GM Bill Stoneman said Monday that he's "thrown some offers out there already," and one is believed to be to slugger Alfonso Soriano, possibly for six years and about $80 million.
-- Los Angeles Times

The Red Sox' Manny Ramirez, who would certainly fit the Phils' need for a big righthanded bat behind Ryan Howard, remains available for a trade. Ramirez has been connected to the Phillies in reports out of Boston, but a deal for him remains a long shot.
-- Philadelphia Inquirer

Two names to keep an eye on as the Yankees' next first baseman: Nomar Garciaparra and Carlos Lee.
-- Boston Herald

The Dodgers' chances of re-signing Nomar Garciaparra increased only slightly when right fielder J.D. Drew opted out of the last three years of his contract. Despite discussions about Garciaparra playing some outfield or third base, the Dodgers would be reluctant to play him anywhere except first base because of his history of injuries.
