There are at least six possibilities for the Alabama job, none of which have a direct link to the school: Rutger's Greg Schiano, former Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez, Tulsa's Steve Kragthorpe, Wake Forest's Jim Grobe, Cal's Jeff Tedford and Navy's Paul Johnson. Cincinnati coach Mark Dantonio gained momentum in interviews during the weekend, beating out at least three other candidates believed to be finalists for the Michigan State position -- Miami Dolphins assistant Charlie Baggett, LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini and Central Michigan head coach Brian Kelly. Speculation about the next Cincinnati coach will center on Akron's J.D. Brookhart. UC athletic director Mike Thomas hired Brookhart at Akron and the two are close. Mack Brown's got a degree from Florida State. Once Bobby Bowden steps down, Florida State probably will at least check on Brown's interest. Early possibilities to replace Chuck Amato at North Carolina State are Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow, Navy coach Paul Johnson and Tulsa coach Steve Kragthorpe. Arkansas' Houston Nutt became the fourth SEC football coach in a week to at least publicly distance himself from the Miami vacancy. Making similar statements this past week were South Carolina's Steve Spurrier, Georgia's Mark Richt and Auburn's Tommy Tuberville. Several schools are reportedly contacting South Florida coach Jim Leavitt, who has turned down offers before, in the wake of USF's biggest win yet. Leavitt was mentioned by various national media outlets as a possible candidate at Miami. Leavitt's name also has surfaced as a possibility to replace Mike Shula if he is fired at Alabama. 1 of 2 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
