Boston assistant GM Jed Hoyer and owner John W. Henry both refused to comment on a report out of Houston that the Red Sox had begun negotiations with Roger Clemens, whose chances of returning to Boston may have ended when Daisuke Matsuzaka agreed to terms. Beyond the money, Vernon Wells said a priority is how the Toronto team "shapes up over how many years I'd be there. I want to be where we can win." In that light, did the Jays' failure to sign free-agent pitchers Ted Lilly and Gil Meche at last week's winter meetings hurt the club's chances? A day after the Rockies shipped staff ace Jason Jennings to Houston in exchange for three players, general manager Dan O'Dowd said other moves could be in the works. The White Sox, for instance, desperately need a speedy leadoff hitter and might be willing to shop center fielder Brian Anderson, but O'Dowd said the Rockies aren't interested. What are the chances of Barry Bonds' hitting fewer than 21 home runs this year? Between his aging body and the lineup the Giants have built around him, the prospects seem very good. It's not too hard to imagine the Giants signing Bonds for 2008 if he hasn't hit No. 755 by the end of this season. On the trade front, the Dodgers are dangling starter Brad Penny as a spark for talk with the Cardinals. The Mets could use the lefthanded Barry Zito in their rotation, and Zito is reportedly intrigued with the possibility of playing in New York, but Omar Minaya does not appear intrigued about giving Zito near the amount of money that Scott Boras is looking for. The Pirates have rejected the Phillies' request for one of two relievers, Mike Gonzalez or Salomon Torres, in exchange for starter Jon Lieber. The Tigers are satisfied they won't see a recurrence of the right wrist and forearm inflammation that sidelined Joel Zumaya for three games of the ALCS. Why? Club president and general manager Dave Dombrowski told WXYT-AM the team had concluded Zumaya's injury resulted from playing a video game. Zumaya was known to play "Guitar Hero," a PlayStation 2 game. In their search for a first baseman, the Yankees are contemplating a platoon, a solution that would further increase the already significant possibility that Bernie Williams won't have a place on next year's roster. The Jose Vidro trade is an example of the Nationals' stated plan, eschewing success in 2007 but stockpiling young players who might contribute in the future. According to sources familiar with the deal, the Nationals are due to receive Chris Snelling, a 25-year-old outfielder, and Emiliano Fruto, a 22-year-old righthanded reliever, for Vidro. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
