Kansas City talks aimed at new contracts for future free agents Larry Johnson and Tony Gonzalez have stalled. With so many teams so flush with money, Gonzalez could hit a bonanza on the open market, as would Johnson. Bill Cowher could prowl the Steelers' sideline for the final time at Heinz Field Sunday, yet he said it will hold no special significance for him, nor will he reflect on it possibly being his last home game as coach. Bears GM Jerry Angelo indicated that some voices within the organization initially called for Tank Johnson's termination. But eventually the Bears reached a consensus that Johnson was worth saving and that the team shared a responsibility to provide a tight structure around a player who appears to need one. As if Tank Johnson didn't have enough problems -- the county probation department took steps Monday that could land the embattled Bears lineman in jail for up to a year. A petition asserts three violations by Johnson. Until Giants coach Tom Coughlin calmed down the last few games, his sideline rants were embarrassing to the organization. It was not realistic to expect his players to play a disciplined game when their leader was out of control. Browns coach Romeo Crennel threw cold water Monday on the Derek Anderson fever that has swept the town over the past few weeks. Crennel also made it clear he's not ready to demote Charlie Frye just yet. Word is former Jets GM Terry Bradway would be interested in talking to the Giants about replacing the soon-to-be-retired Ernie Accorsi. There are rumblings that he's feeling rejuvenated and is thinking about taking another crack at a GM position. 1 of 2 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
