It will be a terrific NFL Draft unless there's some truth to what we read on ProFootballTalk.com's rumor mill about Texas quarterback Vince Young possibly having second thoughts. Young evidently hasn't hired an agent yet and, according to the report, NFL insiders "expect" Texas coach Mack Brown to try to convince Young to change his mind. With record-setting tailbacks LenDale White and Reggie Bush on their way to the NFL, opportunity abounds for possible replacements in USC's backfield. Freshman tailback Michael Coleman, however, said Thursday that he would miss spring practice and would not be able to compete until fall training camp. Senior Hershel Dennis will be the Trojans' only experienced tailback during the spring. USC's coaching staff was awaiting word from three other draft-eligible juniors. Offensive tackle Winston Justice said he would announce his decision today. Guard Fred Matua said he was still seeking information and would announce on Saturday. Safety Darnell Bing met with Athletic Director Mike Garrett and could announce as soon as today, a source said. The miracle some Wisconsin football fans were hoping for did not materialize Thursday. As expected, junior tailback Brian Calhoun announced during a news conference that he has decided to skip his senior season and enter the April NFL. Florida State tailback Lorenzo Booker, the team's top rusher last season, said Thursday that he will return for his senior season with the goal of proving he can be the difference maker. The University of Miami football program announced Thursday that two of its most talented juniors will return for their senior seasons. Defensive tackle Baraka Atkins and wide receiver Ryan Moore debated whether to declare for the NFL Draft by Sunday's deadline, but both opted for another year of experience. Colorado kicker Mason Crosby said he is torn between returning to the Buffaloes for his senior season or declaring himself eligible for NFL draft in April. Crosby has until Sunday -- the NFL's deadline for underclassmen to declare for early entry -- to decide. Despite a dismal season, Illinois coach Ron Zook has received commitments from a group that is ranked among the top 25 recruiting classes in the country and among the top four in the Big Ten by two major recruiting Web sites. The Missouri football coaching staff appears to be embracing the often tried but rarely successful tactic of finding immediate help through the junior college ranks. The current 24 Missouri recruits probably will be the lowest Big 12-rated class in coach Gary Pinkel's tenure. Slow starts and sluggish offense have led University of Kentucky basketball coach Tubby Smith to shake up his starting lineup. Smith said Randolph Morris and Ravi Moss will start Saturday versus Alabama. Georgia Tech basketball coach Paul Hewitt has two escape clauses in his current contract, which runs for another 5 1/2 seasons. One is fairly typical -- he can leave for an NBA job without being subject to a buyout. One is fairly atypical -- he can leave within two years of AD Dave Braine's exit. So start the clock. Missouri may have to try for its sixth straight victory without Thomas Gardner. Gardner and teammate Marshall Brown went after a loose-ball rebound during practice Thursday afternoon and collided. Gardner's head connected with Brown's shoulder. Both players went down. Brown got up quickly. Gardner did not. And Gardner, who appeared confused, was later diagnosed with a mild concussion. An MRI exam on the knee of USC signee Kasey Cunningham revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament that is expected to sideline the 6-foot-7 forward for the remainder of his senior season at Albuquerque Cibola High. | |||||||
