Truth & Rumors: Feb. 10, 2006Posted: Friday February 10, 2006 11:17AM; Updated: Sunday February 12, 2006 2:48AM Indiana fans have had enough of the team's struggles and coach Mike Davis. The IU Nation is venting in chat rooms, in e-mails to The Indianapolis Star and on local radio talk shows. Hoosiers players are defending Davis, accepting blame and sharing fans' frustration. With Tennessee officials already working toward an extension and raise for Coach Bruce Pearl, he said yesterday there's no reason for concern. He's at Tennessee for the long haul. Villanova starting guard Mike Nardi was still sick in bed with severe tonsillitis yesterday and may not be able to make the fourth-ranked Wildcats' trip to Chicago, where they will play DePaul tomorrow in a Big East meeting. The Wildcats hope he will feel well enough to face top-ranked Connecticut on Monday. An NCAA panel decided yesterday that a uniform video review system should be implemented in college football. Coaches would be allowed to challenge close calls and officials in the press box could stop games to review plays with instant replay under new NCAA rules that all Division I-A football teams and conferences would use next season. Big East bashers might have to get a grip if the current RPI rankings do not change in the next few weeks. Since the NCAA Tournament selection committee has been using the rankings, every team in the top 35 has made the 64-team field. Nine Big East teams are currently ranked in the top 35. Maryland coach Gary Williams said he has been trying to convince junior Ekene Ibekwe of his potential, but it wasn't until the second half against Virginia on Tuesday night that the California native truly flourished against a conference opponent. Ibekwe finished with 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds - including 10 in the second half. If Illinois is to win its third straight Big Ten championship and again advance deep into NCAA tournament play, James Augustine will have to be in the game. And the main way for him to stay in the game is to stay away from foul trouble. Augustine knows because he has more than the memory of his foul-plagued, scoreless performance in Illinois' 75-70 loss to North Carolina in the NCAA championship game last April to remind him. Heralded freshman receiver Fred Rouse, dismissed from the Florida State team for an unspecified violation of team rules last month along with promising redshirt freshman guard Cornelius Lewis, could end up at LSU, California-Berkeley, Texas El-Paso or Division I-AA Tennessee State. Scholarship releases were sent to those schools. Nick Holt said hello again to USC football players on Thursday as the former Trojan assistant officially rejoined Pete Carroll's staff as defensive coordinator. Holt was lured back this week shortly after he resigned as head coach at Idaho after two seasons to become defensive line coach for the St. Louis Rams. The national champion Texas football team will visit the White House on Tuesday to be honored by President Bush. Bush, who used to attend UT sporting events while he was governor of Texas. Former FSU star quarterback Casey Weldon, a bay area resident, is heading to Tallahassee to coach his high school alma mater, North Florida Christian. Weldon hasn't coached, except his son's flag football team, and he joked that team didn't do well. | |||
