When March Madness gets going, expect Villanova to be at the Wachovia Center for the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. For that to happen, 'Nova does not have to be a No. 1 seed in the East region. The second-ranked Wildcats don't have to beat out Connecticut to stay at home. Both 'Nova and UConn could end up here. In fact, that's the most likely scenario right now. Could Notre Dame miss out on the Big East tournament and still get consideration for an NCAA tournament bid? Selection committee chairman Craig Littlepage said Wednesday that expansion of major conferences has created new twists in the evaluation process because of unbalanced conference scheduling. Because of that, a team might have a losing conference record with losses to highly ranked teams but still have credentials to be considered for one of the 34 at-large openings in the 65-team field. Just two weeks ago, it seemed doubtful Texas A&M would be attractive to even the NIT. After a four-game winning streak, however, the Aggies (17-7, 7-6 Big 12) are in contention for a fourth-place finish in the Big 12 race. They also have a puncher's chance at the program's first NCAA Tournament bid since 1987. They'll need a strong finish to the season and an impressive showing in the Big 12 tournament Colorado's team hotel, The Cornhusker, was the backdrop Wednesday as eight workers from a nearby meatpacking plant claimed the $365 million Powerball lottery. The Buffaloes couldn't bring any of that good fortune to the Devaney Center against the Cornhuskers who may have ended Colorado's bid for the NCAA tournament. An Internet report that highly touted forward Davon Jefferson has committed to USC is incorrect, a source said. USC still has not committed its fifth and final scholarship for next season. USC's RouSean Cromwell received clearance to play against Oregon tonight, but the freshman forward's minutes will be limited by his conditioning and understanding of offensive and defensive sets that have evolved since he broke his right foot two months ago. Two key positions the UCLA Bruins will be looking to fill this spring are running back, where Chris Markey, Kahlil Bell and Derrick Williams will compete for Maurice Drew's old spot, and tight end, where J.J. Hair, Logan Paulsen, Ryan Moya and Adam Heater are vying to replace Marcedes Lewis. Miami is expected to complete its coaching staff by hiring Northern Illinois assistant coach Marquis Mosely as receivers coach. Mosely was informed Wednesday that he was UM's choice over two other finalists with more experience -- ex-Duke associate head coach David Kelly and former Vikings receivers coach and NFL standout Wes Chandler. Ricky Logo, a co-defensive coordinator and defensive tackles coach at Troy University in Alabama, has accepted a job offer from Vanderbilt, filling the lone Commodores coaching job left vacant following last season. | |||||||
