Colorado basketball coach Ricardo Patton has been informed his contract will not be extended, a source close to the CU men's program told the Rocky Mountain News.

Freshman quarterback Cody Hawkins, the older son of Colorado football coach Dan Hawkins, will be on the Buffs' roster this year, but he will not immediately compete for the starting job. Instead, the plan is for Cody to redshirt, the elder Hawkins said Thursday.

Kansas State coach Bob Huggins' contract remains unsigned. His agent, Richard Katz, said Thursday that language is being finalized and "there's no holdup, no disagreement." Huggins' take: "I don't know what it matters. I'm getting paychecks, so life is grand."

Sidney Lowe will be the first African American head men's basketball coach at one of the ACC's Big Four schools in North Carolina. He does not meet one of the requirements for the job because he does not hold a bachelor's degree; but Keathen Wilson, provost of Saint Paul's College in Lawrenceville, Va., said Thursday that Lowe is expected in June to complete the last nine credit hours for a business administration degree there.

The long-running recruiting saga for Lance Thomas of St. Benedict's Prep finally drew to a close yesterday when The Star-Ledger Prep Player of the Year the past two seasons announced he will attend Duke. The 6-8 forward said his decision came down to Duke and Rutgers, with Florida third and Louisville a late entry about a month ago.

Texas-OU is staying in Dallas -- for now. Texas and Oklahoma officials agreed Thursday afternoon to a new five-year contract that will keep their football series at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas through 2010, State Fair of Texas and school officials confirmed.

Mizzou athletics director Mike Alden, said he was surprised by David Wassinger's motion for a creation of a task force to oversee athletics on the four University of Missouri campuses.

Two UCLA freshman football players, John Hale and Jess Ward, pleaded not guilty Thursday to felony assault charges in connection to a house-party fight in February.

At the conclusion of an otherwise nondescript spring football practice last month, first-year head coach Bret Bielema ordered Wisconsin players to run a series of sprints from sideline to sideline. Bielema acknowledged afterward that the sprints were a form of punishment for several players' poor "off-field" performance, presumably in the classroom. On Thursday, Bielema sent an even stronger message by announcing that he had suspended defensive end Jamal Cooper for the season opener Sept. 2 against Bowling Green.

Arizona State baseball coach Pat Murphy is nearing a resolution of personnel issues with outfielder J.J. Sferra and his father Jay, a longtime ASU assistant coach. The Sferras did not travel with ASU to Stanford last week and were not with the team for a home game against Arizona on Tuesday. Murphy met with both Wednesday.

When Cincinnati police stumbled across Northern Kentucky University basketball player Gavin Ludgood outside an apartment complex Thursday morning, not only was the senior player out of uniform, he was out of all his clothes. Ludgood was arrested on several misdemeanor charges including public indecency after police say he had been causing quite a scene. Police say they received numerous calls from residents because Ludgood was banging on a car and an apartment door while naked just before 8 a.m.
