Significantly altering the landscape of mid-major college basketball in the Midwest, traditional power Valparaiso is leaving the Mid-Continent Conference to join the Horizon League. The move, announced Wednesday, will take effect in the 2007-08 season and will strengthen the Horizon League, which includes Butler and has gained a reputation for upsets in the NCAA Tournament. At the same time, the Crusaders' departure will drop the Mid-Con to seven schools, the minimum required to keep an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The automatic bid is seen as crucial financially, as it guarantees conference members a share of the tournament money.

But his 15-month tenure as a Boilermaker didn't officially end until this week, when Purdue coach Joe Tiller released him from the letter of intent he signed in February 2005. Paxson is now free to pursue baseball.

William & Mary will appeal an NCAA decision that the feathers in the school's logo are offensive to American Indians. William & Mary will be allowed to keep its "Tribe" nickname but can't use it in NCAA title competitions and is barred from holding NCAA events. The school had argued the Tribe nickname "is designed to communicate ennobling sentiments of commitment, shared idealism, community and common cause." The NCAA said it agreed the nickname "Tribe" wasn't offensive, but combined with the logo showing two feathers "transforms that . . . to stereotypical reference to Native Americans."
