HOT: Penn State
In answer to all the folks who wonder why the football coach is usually a college's highest paid official, PSU President Graham Spanier, in his meeting with the school's trustees, announced that applications to Happy Valley were up a record-setting 12.3 percent. Asked to explain the spike, Spanier responded, "It probably didn't hurt that we ranked third in the nation in football."

NOT: Florida State
When asked if football players have changed since he started in the business, FSU coach Bobby Bowden provided bulletin board material for his own team by saying, "They wear their hair different, got those cute little earrings on," adding, "they want to be like their mamas." We hope he means "be liked by their mamas" but to be honest, we have no idea.

HOT: Marquette
Those of you who are consumed by trying to figure out how Dwyane Wade ended up playing his college ball in Milwaukee can rest now. Bill Russell has the answer. "A friend of mine is a huge Marquette booster," said the Celtics legend. "I was with him one Saturday in Milwaukee, and he asked if I wanted to go to a recruiting session. That was the session where Dwyane Wade was in high school. All I said to [Wade] was, 'If you go to Marquette there are two things you will not get. You will not be miss-coached, and you will not be miss-educated'."

NOT: Iowa
When Iowa quarterback Drew Tate nailed a hole-in-one on the 178-yard par three 13th hole at the Aegon Advantage tournament on Friday, he won $25,000 towards the purchase of a new Dodge. The 2004 All-Big Ten QB laid out plans to cash in the prize and buy a Harley chopper but after investigating the issue, Iowa athletic director Bob Bowlsby informed Tate that those pesky NCAA rules prohibit Tate, who has one more season with the Hawkeyes, from receiving the prize.

HOT: Northwestern
On their way to their D-1 record 34-game losing streak in football during the early eighties, the Wildcats succumbed to Michigan State 61-14, prompting their fans to tear down the goal posts and carry them through the streets chanting, "We're the worst!" It's time for an new, more positive refrain in Evanston after the women's lax team won their second straight national title and the softball squad toppled No. 1-ranked UCLA to advance to their first ever College World Series. In support of his scorching alma mater, bandwagon driver Michael Wilbon sported a Northwerstern baseball jersey during the 1000th episode of Pardon the Interruption.
