Tennessee reserve quarterback Jim Bob Cooter, a fan favorite and one of the brightest players on the team, has been suspended indefinitely after his arrest early Saturday morning on a drunken driving charge near campus. Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer said Cooter, a fifth-year senior, would miss the Sept. 2 opener against California.

Jarryd Cole, one of the Kansas City area's top basketball recruits in the class of 2007, has given an oral commitment to Iowa. Cole, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound power forward from Winnetonka, chose the Hawkeyes after attending a camp in Iowa City over the weekend.

The possibility of the financially strapped Houston Bowl being played this year is a "50-50 proposition," Big 12 commissioner Kevin Weiberg said Monday. The Houston Bowl is without a title sponsor and television deal, and owes a portion of its $1.2 million payout to the Big 12 and Mountain West conferences for playing in last year's game at Reliant Stadium. The NCAA bowl certification committee has set a deadline for the end of June to decide the six-year-old bowl's fate.
