The Joy of Hitting (cont.)Posted: Friday June 9, 2006 1:58PM; Updated: Tuesday June 13, 2006 5:45PM Yes, I know a lady isn't supposed to grunt, but it's hard work. It is the single best therapy that I can possibly imagine, especially with some of our hard hitters out there.
Nicole Leis, aka "Army," is one of those ladies who never misses the opportunity to get in a good hit. She is a 22-year-old Wisconsin native and former rugby player for Winona State (tough girl). We call her Army because she just re-enlisted for another three years in the National Guard. In fact, she just got back in December from tours in Iraq and Kuwait, which causes me to give her a 10 in the "dedication to country" category. Not that we are rating people here, but if we were, she would be doing very well. Army is also going to be a student at UW-Madison this fall and she decided to play football because it would be a new and challenging experience. Though she loves the camaraderie of this team, she has mentioned that hitting people is more fun than she ever imagined. (Do you sense a theme here?) The cool thing is that Army is only one of 60 fascinating women on this team. All have different backgrounds and stories of how they got here. In the future, I will let you in on more of the key players, not only from our team, but from the others in the league as well. But now I have to start getting ready for tomorrow, when I will travel to the Illini Football Women's Gridiron Camp with our head coach. It looks to be a pretty cool experience that I will tell you all about on Tuesday! To find out more about the WPFL, go here.
