Cornerback Avery Atkins, accused of striking the mother of his 2-month-old child last week, will be released from the University of Florida football program, coach Urban Meyer announced Thursday. Keystone Oaks defensive lineman Myles Caragein had 30 scholarship offers, including a number from schools in the Atlantic Coast Conference and Big Ten. In the end, however, he said his decision was simple -- it came down to which coaching staff he trusts the most. That's why Caragein told Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt that he wants to play for the Panthers. Wide receiver Kerry Taylor is the second player from Chandler Hamilton High to commit to Arizona State, joining linebacker Colin Parker. ASU has four commitments to sign letters of intent in February. Of those, Taylor is the highest rated. University of South Florida quarterback Carlton Hill and two former Bulls football players were arrested Monday and charged with possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor. Mick Cronin is close to completing his first University of Cincinnati coaching staff. The Bearcats' first-year basketball coach announced Thursday that New Mexico State's Tony Stubblefield has joined the program as an assistant coach. UC is expected to announce within the next few weeks that former Bearcat guard Andre Tate will serve as video coordinator and work in student-athlete development. Georgia Tech baseball coach Danny Hall, who earlier this month led the Yellow Jackets to the College World Series for the third time in his 13 seasons at the school, has received a one-year contract extension, through 2011. Arizona State will honor its 1986 and 1996 Pac-10 champion football teams during a Champions Weekend, Nov. 10-11. The teams are celebrating the 20th and 10th anniversaries of their seasons. | |||
