Brigid Mullen DiaryAn account of the gridiron girl's first gamePosted: Tuesday July 18, 2006 3:21PM; Updated: Wednesday July 19, 2006 11:24AM
Turns out that guys are not the only ones who play dirty on the field. Our first scrimmage was on Saturday, in Madison, and we had a round-robin against teams from Minnesota and Ohio. I had had a tough week and, despite my nerves, couldn't wait to take out a little aggression on some unsuspecting females. This scrimmage was the first time I would be hitting people who were not my teammates and we were auditioning for a starting spot -- place at the table, as they say -- in The Program. The game featured some good, old fashioned hard-hitting, as well as some clips, facemasks, and cheap punches to the ribs. In the trenches, there was some name-calling that you'd never want your mother to hear. But hey, that's football, right? We have only a week until our first real game and I think fans are catching on to the excitement. At Summerfest in Milwaukee this past weekend -- where I caught performances by Lewis Black, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alice Cooper and Mary J. Blige -- I took an informal survey and asked a couple hundred people if they'd watch a women's game. I'd say that at least 90% said that they would definitely watch. We even had the WKOTV news crew come to do a story on the team, and it turned out really well. Hopefully, once people are exposed to girl's gridiron, they will buy into it. I'm pretty sure that I saw ESPN airing a dominoes game the other day, so I think we might have a fighting chance of getting picked up nationally. Which would you rather see: out of shape guys pushing dominoes or women wrestling on the foorball field? Alright, I gotta run. Check back in two weeks to find how our first game went. | |||||||
