6. California (63) - The No. 1 Golden Bears men's water polo team recorded five victories last weekend as they defeated St. Francis, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Bucknell and Navy by a combined score of 80-23. Senior center Brian Kinsel was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week after collecting 10 goals, three assists, three steals, and 10 forced ejections. Cal hosts No. 5 Pacific on Thursday night and UC Davis on Saturday.

7. Texas (59) - Like USC, the Longhorns football squad had no problem transitioning to a new QB as Colt McCoy threw for three TDs in Texas' 56-7 throttling of North Texas. Things will be different this week as the top-ranked Longhorns meet the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes in Austin without starting cornerback Tarell Brown and backup linebacker/special teamer Tyrell Gatewood, who coach Mack Brown suspended after the two were arrested on misdemeanor charges.

8. North Carolina (58.5) - In one of the stranger scenes in women's soccer in a while, Yael Averbuch of the Tar Heels set a record for the fastest goal in NCAA women's soccer history by shooting the ball off the ground from the midfield stripe and into the top center of the goal from 55 yards out to begin a game against Yale last weekend. Averback, who won ACC Player of the Week honros, had two goals and an assist in the win. The No. 6 Tar Heels are 4-1 on the season and travel next weekend to Portland, Oregon, for the 2006 Nike Portland Invitational. UNC will play Washington on Friday and then face off against defending NCAA champion Portland on Sunday.

9. Florida (52.5) - The No. 7 Gators football team kicked off its 100th season with a 34-7 victory over the Southern Miss in front of 90,043 fans at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday night. Heisman candidate Chris Leak was 21-of-30 for 248 yards and three TD passes while senior Dallas Baker had nine receptions for 123 yards and one TD. But not everyone was impressed with the Gators' performance. "I was extremely upset with the way it started, I felt like we could have played so much better," head coach Urban Meyer said. "But last year we might not have dug ourselves out. We were very disappointed with the start; that is not Florida football. But it's another win, and we take great pride in that." The Gators will host UCF on Saturday.

10. Tennessee (51) - The No. 23 Vols showed they're ready to put last season's disappointing 5-6 finish behind them after defeating No. 9 California 35-18 in Knoxville. Erik Ainge threw four TD passes, two to junior receiver Robert Meachem. Tennessee had been 0-6 against top 10 teams in Neyland Stadium since 2000, but didn't let that stop them from beating the Golden Bears "We all felt disrespected," Ainge said after the game. "This game tonight wasn't just for Tennessee versus California. It was for the South versus the West Coast, the SEC versus the Pac-10."
