The Monday AwardsHonoring the best -- and worst -- from the week that wasPosted: Monday September 18, 2006 10:34AM; Updated: Friday September 29, 2006 6:01PM Poking fun at the college sports world, one Monday at a time.... Dome of the Week
Yes, Florida won the game, but credit is due to this Tennessee fan who spent way too much time on this design -- especially since he likely spent the day turning around so people could see it. Good Coach of the Week Lloyd Carr, Michigan -- He has been criticized repeatedly during his 10-year tenure with the Wolverines - including a Fire Lloyd Carr website - but with yesterday's win, the coach is now 105-34 with the Wolverines and has his team primed for a run at the national championship. Bad Coach of the Week Paul Rhoads, Pittsburgh Defensive Coordinator -- Michigan State QB Drew Stanton seemingly ran the option for a first down on every other play, but Rhoads refused to make any adjustments to stop it. The result was two Spartan runners with over 100 yards (Stanton - 103; Javon Ringer - 156) and a 38-23 loss. To add insult to injury, Stanton took a subtle shot at the Panthers D when he said after the game, "We never intended to run so much option, but a team that plays a lot of man defense like they do has no one to account for the quarterback." At least Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt can take comfort in knowing that highly- regarded Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban is 0-2 to start a season in which most (including SI) picked them to finish first in the AFC East. Steve Spurrier Quote of the Week "I was disappointed he got into a little fight. If he was out with his girlfriend and he wasn't drunk or whatever ... that's what college kids do. I went to college once. But we were in before 1:30. In our day, 12 was a late night." The Emmit Brown Time Machine Game of the Week LSU - Auburn -- Look, it wasn't a boring game, nor was it the defensive masterpiece that some claim. The truth was somewhere in the middle. All the old-time fans I've spoken with in the last couple days say the game was precisely what college football used to be in the '60s. And that's just fine with us. Random Player of the Week Jerraud Powers, Auburn -- The redshirt freshman cornerback figured he'd have a light day, mostly in nickel and dime coverages. But when Jonathan Wilhite pulled a hamstring in the first half, and back-up cornerback Pat Lee stuck at home with a fever, Powers was called into duty. The third stringer fared will against quarterback JeMarcus Russell and LSU's talented receiving corps, ending the day with four tackles and limiting LSU's vaunted passing game. Annoying Theme of the Week Separation Saturday -- Do we really need to give every week of the college football season a name? Next thing you know, people will start doing weekly award columns and naming them after days of the week. I Told You So Award Nate Harris, Louisville -- The senior linebacker, who stated earlier in the week that Miami ''wasn't what it used to be,'' had four tackles and a key fumble recovery to lead No. 12 Louisville to a 31-7 win against the No. 17 Hurricanes. Unfortunately, his postgame comments weren't as exciting. After the game, when he could have poured salt into the wound, Miami-native Harris took the high road and said: ''This should wake up a lot of people, open their eyes. It's special because it's my hometown team, but it's a big win for our program, the next obstacle for us.'' Bad Call of the Week Lee Corso -- On ESPN's Gameday, he made this not so good prediction about the Vols-Gators matchup. "I don't know if Florida is tough enough to go into that Tennessee place. They're soft and I don't know if they can stand it."
