On Monday, the Michigan State Spartans said that Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said in his postgame news conference that an MSU player slapped him during a sideline scuffle in the second quarter on Saturday. But Notre Dame senior associate athletic director John Heisler said Monday that Weis never made that accusation. Weis said Sunday that the hitter "might have been one of my guys that slapped me, for all I know."

Rhett Bomar is still working out with the Sam Houston State football team and attending classes. But school officials still don't know when the NCAA will rule on the quarterback's eligibility. Bomar is not expected make the travel squad for this week's game at No. 7 Texas, SHSU spokesman Paul Ridings said. Coach Todd Whitten told The News he hopes to hear something by midseason.

Georgia junior Kregg Lumpkin has been plugged into the starting role for Saturday's game at Ole Miss. Thomas Brown, who has started every game the past two seasons, came into his junior campaign hoping to put some separation between himself and his tailback competition. But his per-carry average is down from 5.0 in 2005 to 2.9.

USC receiver Dwayne Jarrett did not practice Monday, and left before the workout ended, but Coach Pete Carroll said the All-American told him he intended to make a run at playing. Regardless, sophomore Patrick Turner, senior Chris McFoy and freshman Vidal Hazelton have moved up the depth chart.

No. 11 Virginia Tech suspended two starters for Saturday's game against No. 24 Georgia Tech, but the Hokies might get two other key players back. Receiver Josh Morgan and defensive end Chris Ellis will sit out the game for unspecified violations of team rules, coach Frank Beamer said Monday. However, ESPN reported Monday that the two were arrested following an altercation outside of a nightclub in Blacksburg, Va., on misdemeanor charges of obstructing an officer.
