Best cheerleaders: The Charger Girls. While the Aztec cheerleaders are nothing to scoff at, they're still not the pros. Antonio Gates and LaDainian Tomlinson certainly aren't packing the stands at Qualcomm -- it's got to be girls, some of whom come from the Aztec and Torero ranks, who brighten the day.

Best place to indulge the late-night munchies: Cotijas Mexican Food in Pacific Beach. The California burrito -- steak, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, heart attack -- is a staple of the San Diego diet. Even though just about every college student here eats one at least twice a week, they still end up looking like a cast member from Laguna Beach. Lucky us. Cotijas is just one of hundreds of similar restaurants throughout the city, but it gets the nod because of its proximity to the bars and its red salsa.

Best place to drink cheap beer on Friday night: Beach Comber in Mission Beach. How can you go wrong with 75-cent pint night? From 8 to 10 p.m., the Comb is packed -- a little too packed. It's a good idea to arrive an hour early, as the line moves incredibly slow.

Best place for expensive and inexpensive Sunday-morning breakfast: Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island and The Broken Yolk in Pacific Beach. The Sunday brunch at Hotel Del Coronado is legendary, but the price doesn't fit a college budget. Bring your parents. The Broken Yolk, on the other hand, tastes great and doesn't break the bank.

Best place to get very cheap appetizers and very good beer: The Yard House downtown. If chicken strips and a Hefeweizen are your thing, the Yard House offers both at discounted prices during happy hour. In my case, it's more like ecstatic hour. The beer selection is impeccable, as is the list of appetizers, so bring good friends and big appetites. Or big friends and good appetites -- same difference.

Best place to catch a tan: Anywhere, but if I have to choose, Pacific Beach. Some will swear that PB is just too damn busy; those who do so are probably more cut out for North Dakota than Southern California. PB has the biggest collection of honeys since Winnie the Pooh, and most are bronze-skinned and, umm, well-endowed. PB fills up fast, typically with beach bums, surfer bros and transplanted frat guys, but it's worth the journey. That is, if you're not from North Dakota.

Best place to catch a win: Torero Stadium at the University of San Diego. The Division I-AA Toreros feature an explosive offense and a great coach, former NFL standout Jim Harbaugh. With QB Josh Johnson leading the way, USD is 3-0 after an 11-1 season last year. Mark it down: Harbaugh will be roaming the sidelines for a major college team very soon.

Best place to catch an STD: Tijuana, Mexico. For $60, well, you know the rest ...
