Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano has already reached enough incentives in the first year of his new seven-year deal that he is assured of earning at least $1 million this year -- or nearly twice as much as university President Richard McCormick, the state's next-highest paid employee. Former Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder said he's been fielding a few pitches himself. Snyder revealed he's been contacted by other colleges gauging his interest in making a coaching comeback in 2007. He would not reveal the colleges that contacted him. Would Snyder, 67, consider a return? He didn't rule it out. Texas coach Mack Brown remained non-committal on whether he would use walk-on sophomore Ryan Bailey as his placekicker Saturday at Texas Tech. It will depend on the health of senior Greg Johnson, who aggravated a groin injury in the 22-20 win over Nebraska. Freshman Hunter Lawrence is another option but may be used solely for kickoffs. Brown said he will likely travel with four kickers. Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer didn't express much hope Thursday that senior receiver Jayson Swain would be able to play Saturday against South Carolina. Georgia Tech quarterback Reggie Ball is expected to start Saturday. Will the coach be quicker to replace him with Taylor Bennett in the event he's beat up again? "No," Chan Gailey said. If Colorado has interest in Nuggets assistant Mike Dunlap replacing Ricardo Patton, the school might have to wait to speak with him. The Nuggets assistant is in the first year of a three-year contract with the NBA team. Nuggets coach George Karl said Thursday the franchise might refuse permission for Dunlap to interview if contacted by CU until after the season. Miami's linebacking corps, depleted by injuries of late, got some good news Thursday. Coach Larry Coker said starting weak-side linebacker Jon Beason, who injured his left knee against FIU two weeks ago, will play Saturday at Georgia Tech. Oregon State backed out of what would have been a three-game series starting next season, leaving Georgia without an opening-game opponent for 2007. USC quarterback Mark Sanchez practiced for the second day in a row and will back up John David Booty on Saturday. On the surface, it would appear that senior offensive tackle Brian Stamper has played his final game for Vanderbilt. But upon further review, the Commodores may have reason for hope - and reasonable hope - that Stamper could rejoin the team for next season. Stamper said information is being gathered in order to file a medical hardship waiver with the SEC. | |||||||
