A new movie planned about the life of former Notre Dame football player George Gipp may star current Fighting Irish quarterback Brady Quinn in a role previously played by Ronald Reagan. Independent filmmaker Roger Corman, whose credits include more than 400 movies as a producer, director or actor, will produce "Win One for the Gipper." Michael Irvin, one of the most prominent former Hurricanes, said Wednesday that Miami coach Larry Coker should be replaced at the end of the season and that it would make sense to bring back two familiar names -- Butch Davis as coach and Gary Stevens as offensive coordinator. Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby said Wednesday afternoon that he will not evaluate Cardinal coach Walt Harris in the media, but declined to commit to whether Harris would be back next season. Navy's wins and coach Paul Johnson's North Carolina roots have made him one of those most often mentioned as a possible successor to John Bunting at North Carolina. Erik Ainge, gimpy ankle and all, is sure he'll be able to play Saturday against LSU. Tennessee Coach Phillip Fulmer isn't so sure, and leading receiver Robert Meachem thinks the Vols will end up playing both Ainge and backup Jonathan Crompton. Steve Mariucci would be a disaster at Michigan State. He's simply not the right fit for what the Spartans need in another coaching transition. Former Miami and Browns coach Butch Davis would make more sense. Because of his friendship with basketball coach Tom Izzo, Mariucci has been the hot name since the Lions dumped him after last Thanksgiving. Tyrone Willingham, University of Washington head coach, has been mentioned as a candidate for the Michigan State coaching job. Willingham is a former Spartan star. Jim Harbaugh, University of San Diego head coach and Bo Pelini, LSU defensive coordinator have also been mentioned as candidates. Michigan State could have two head football coaches for an extended period of time. President Lou Anna Simon and Board of Trustees vice chairman Joel Ferguson said they would have no problem hiring a new coach while John L. Smith remained with the program through a potential bowl game. Hiring a new coach quickly would allow him to begin establishing a relationship with MSU's verbal commitments -- Rivals.com lists the Spartans with 11 -- and filling in the class quickly. Michigan junior wide receiver Adrian Arrington's legal issues will extend for at least a few more weeks. Arrington, who is charged with one misdemeanor count of domestic violence in an Oct. 13 incident, will be allowed to leave the state of Michigan for the Wolverines' final two road games at Indiana and Ohio State. Despite two fumbles against Oregon State, Chauncey Washington remains USC's No. 1 tailback. Coach Pete Carroll said freshmen Emmanuel Moody and C.J. Gable would rotate in more against Stanford. Sam Houston State quarterback Rhett Bomar, kicked off the team at Oklahoma in early August, was reinstated by the NCAA for the 2007 season Wednesday, a decision that removed the cloud of uncertainty that had lingered over Bomar and the Bearkats for two months. Bomar has two years of eligibility remaining. Illinois loyalty from former Chicago high school star Isiah "Juice" Williams may be the only reason that the Illini quarterback, who was recruited hard by Ohio State, will be quarterbacking against the No. 1 Buckeyes on Saturday instead of redshirting with them as the future successor to Smith. Florida basketball fans probably won't see more of Walter Hodge this season, but they likely will see more from him. The backup's role will expand to include more time at point guard and more offense - things he didn't really do much of during the Gators' national-championship season despite playing more minutes than any other non-starter. Prized transfer Takais Brown was suspended indefinitely from Georgia's basketball team for "failure to comply to the team's academic standards," coach Dennis Felton said in a statement Wednesday. Brown, a 6-foot-8 junior from Southeastern Illinois College, was expected to start at power forward. | |||||||
