Monday Awards (cont.)Posted: Monday November 6, 2006 1:01PM; Updated: Wednesday November 8, 2006 10:05AM Sign of the Week
I'm not sure if there's a better way to put it than this fan's sign. Miami's football tradition speaks for itself -- five national titles and an all-time record of 525-291-19. This season, however, the Hurricanes are 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the ACC. Let's just say that it's a safe bet that Larry Coker will be looking for work next season. Blog of the Week. Dump Dorrell. After another disappointing effort by UCLA, which lost to Cal 38-24 on Saturday, these UCLA fans decided to stop complaining about the performance of coach Karl Dorrell and take action by starting an online petition to get the coach fired. As of this writing (Sunday afternoon), the petition has 300 signatures and the total is growing. Dumb Comment of the Week Craig James. During Saturday's telecast of the Penn State game, James called Joe Paterno an "old fart" while congratulating Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema on his game strategy after the Badgers beat the Nittany Lions 13-3. As a native New Englander who grew up watching James run for the Patriots, I have always had a soft spot in my heart for him, but this went too far. During Saturday's game, the 80-year-old Penn State coach took a nasty hit on the sideline that resulted in torn ligaments and a broken left knee.
Cool Pic of the Week While we have no allegiance to Notre Dame, this picture of the team (left) coming out on the field, led by QB Brady Quinn is pretty badass. Bad Decision of the Week Steve Mariucci. The former 49ers and Lions coach took himself out of the running for the soon-to-be vacant Michigan State coaching job, thanks to his agent, Sandy Montag, who told NFL.com on Wednesday that Mariucci is not interested in leaving his job as an analyst at NFL Network. "Steve is very happy in broadcasting," Montag said. "He really likes what he's doing at NFL Network. Broadcasting is something that Steve is excited and passionate about." Here's what confuses us. After some success coaching the 49ers (59-39), Mariucci had a terrible three-year run with a talented Lions team (15-28) that effectively closed the door on any future head coaching position in the NFL. As a Michigan native, the Mooch isn't going to get a better opportunity that this to restore his reputation. Why wouldn't he take it? Good Decision of the Week North Carolina. The school's decision to hire Butch Davis, which was reported by Carolinablue.com, is a breath of fresh air for a program that is often viewed as a second class citizen in Chapel Hill compared to the mighty basketball squad. Enter Davis -- a former coach at the University of Miami and in the NFL --to help bring the pigskin team to the level of their roundball brethren. Got a Monday Award nominee?
