Poking fun at the college sports world, one Monday at a time....

Team of the Week

Wake Forest. In the midst of their best season since 1944, the Demon Deacons scored another upset with a 21-14 win over Boston college. Jyles Tucker led the defensive attack with two sacks and a key forced fumble while Wake held the Eagles to just 28 rushing yards. At 8-1 overall (4-1 in the ACC), Wake is one of the season's best stories.

Team of the Week II

Maryland. Yup, another surprise team from the ACC. After going into Death Valley and pulling out a 13-12 victory over Clemson on Saturday, the Terrapins are in the hunt for the ACC title. I repeat, the Terrapins are in the hunt for the ACC title. Coach Ralph Friedgen's bunch has won four straight games (by a combined total of 12 points) to bolster their record to 7-2 (4-1 in the ACC) -- good enough for second place in this bizarro conference.

Bandwagon of the Week

Colt McCoy for Heisman. The freshman was masterful again on Saturday (23-29, 346 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions) as the Longhorns easily disposed of Oklahoma State, 36-10. In just his first season at the helm, McCoy has thrown for 27 TDs -- good enough for sixth place on the UT career list. At his current pace, McCoy will hold Texas' all-time career TD record by the end of his sophomore season. He has thrown for 2,051 yards and just 4 interceptions this year. His passing rating is 172.1, tops in the Big 12, and No. 2 in the nation.

Here's another couple of things to like about McCoy. Last summer, he and his father swam 300 yards to help save someone's life and he's dating a student from Texas Tech, which is pretty impressive when you think about it because it allows him to have his fun with UT women while his girlfriend is a safe distance away. Unless McCoy is the monogamous type.

Coach of the Week

Charlie Weis. The Notre Dame coach took a page out of the Bill Belichick Sweatshirt Book with this look on Saturday (left). Clearly, the 10 years the two coached together were spent discussing more than just football.

Random Player of the Week

Ball State QB Nate Davis. The freshman  nearly gave Ann Arbor a heart attack when he brought his 33.5-point underdog Cardinals to the Wolverines' two-yard-line, down 34-26, before incompleting a fourth-down pass. Speaking of Ball State, did you know that famous alum Dave Letterman  gives a scholarship each year based solely on a student's creativity, no matter their GPA? And the school's audio room is dedicated to Letterman with the inscription: "To All C-Students Before Me and After Me" -- David Letterman.
