College (cont.)Posted: Tuesday November 7, 2006 10:51AM; Updated: Tuesday November 7, 2006 10:51AM It is not known if Joe Paterno will attempt to coach the Temple game from the sidelines or the press box. The game-day operation likely will not change much because defensive coordinator Tom Bradley and offensive coordinator Galen Hall and quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno call all plays. Penn State's football operations staff is finalizing plans for transporting Paterno around the practice field. UCLA quarterback Ben Olson received medical clearance Monday night and is expected to practice today for the first time since his injury. He said last week he was planning to be ready to play Saturday, but coach Karl Dorrell said Olson's return is more likely to come against Arizona State on Nov. 18. If the Wisconsin football team ends its four-game losing streak against rival Iowa, it likely will be forced to do so without fifth-year senior quarterback John Stocco. According to a source, Stocco's throwing arm has been in a sling since at least Sunday and he isn't expected to practice this week or play Saturday. It wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement, but Bobby Bowden announced Monday night that sophomore quarterback Xavier Lee would start again this Saturday against Wake Forest. Kyle Wright, who has become the poster child for Miami's offensive struggles, might not play Saturday at Maryland because of a sprained right thumb. UM spokesman Rick Korch confirmed Monday that Wright has a soft cast on his right (throwing) hand, which has a sprained thumb. He will be evaluated further today. Georgia wide receiver Demiko Goodman tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the first quarter of Saturday's loss to Kentucky. He played the rest of the game. It wasn't until Goodman went to trainer Ron Courson on Sunday to check on a possible calf injury that it was discovered he'd injured the knee and would be out for the rest of the season. Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer said a silly argument among teammates led to the arrests last weekend and subsequent suspensions of Arian Foster, David Holbert and Antonio Wardlow. Fulmer announced Monday that Foster, the Vols' starting tailback, would miss the first half of this coming Saturday's Arkansas game, while Holbert will be suspended for the entire game and Wardlow for the next two games. Greg Oden is sitting on the sideline these days during Ohio State practices. He shouts encouragement to teammates, but he's not yet involved in full workouts. At some point this year -- around Jan. 1 is Buckeyes coach Thad Matta's projection -- Oden will join his team and the 7-footer labeled by some as the best center since Lew Alcindor will hit the college game. Wisconsin has secured another basketball commitment from the state of Minnesota. Jordan Taylor, a 6-foot-1 point guard from suburban Minneapolis, gave the Badgers an oral commitment to join the freshman class of 2008. Taylor averaged 20 points, 6 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game last season. Taylor chose the Badgers over Montana, Utah State, Creighton, Northern Iowa, Dayton, Western Michigan and Delaware. 2 of 2 | |||
