University of Hawai'i defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville might very well be a candidate to fill the head football coaching job at North Texas. He just doesn't know it. Greater Atlanta Christian running back Caleb King will announce his college decision Friday morning. King is believed to be considering Georgia, Auburn, Florida, LSU and Virginia Tech. The Cleveland Browns would not comment on rumors coming out of East Lansing, Mich., that defensive coordinator Todd Grantham will be named head coach at Michigan State on Monday. MSU wants to name a coach by Thanksgiving, but none of the candidates has yet to meet with the university president, according to an NFL source. Jim McIngvale has demanded the University of North Texas remove his name from its football practice facility. In its stead McIngvale insisted that Darrell Dickey's name replace it the same Darrell Dickey whom the university fired as football coach last week. And why is the Gallery Furniture founder in a position to throw his weight around? Because he gave the football program $1 million two years ago. North Texas officials say they will yield to McIngvale's wishes. Former Virginia Tech cornerback Jimmy Williams accepted more than $50,000 worth of merchandise, services and cash while at Virginia Tech from the account of Carl La Mondue, a Norfolk lawyer, according to a lawsuit filed by La Mondue earlier this month. Signing prized recruit O.J. Mayo might have been a three-for-one coup for USC Coach Tim Floyd, who now could benefit from the services of standout juniors Nick Young and Gabe Pruitt for an additional season. USC tailback Chauncey Washington took a few repetitions, but said he felt awkward in his knee brace and would replace it. Washington reiterated he would play against Cal. With freshman Emmanuel Moody sidelined because of an ankle injury, freshmen C.J. Gable, Stafon Johnson and Allen Bradford continued to take repetitions in Washington's place. Although he has 20th-ranked Boston College in contention for first place in the ACC's Atlantic Division, the $733,626 salary Eagles coach Tom O'Brien receives ranks him among the lower third of the league's 12 coaches, according to a USA Today study on coaches' salaries. Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema believes senior quarterback John Stocco might be able to play in UW's regular-season finale Saturday against Buffalo. Stocco, who suffered a separated right shoulder two weeks ago, threw the football in practice Wednesday. On Thursday, he passed the ball and worked on handoffs. In an effort to improve team unity after the Gophers' 44-0 loss at Ohio State, Minnesota coaches assigned an offensive and defensive player to room together for the next couple of games. Results were a 63-26 victory over Indiana and a 31-18 victory at Michigan State.| Miami receiver Rashaun Jones, who was suspended for last week's game at Maryland, will return to the team next week, coach Larry Coker said. Illinois forward Brian Randle is expected to be out four to six weeks after he undergoes surgery today to resolve the groin strain that has limited him for more than two weeks. Illinois also is expected to go four to six weeks without sophomore guard Jamar Smith. Marc Van Burck, a 6-foot-11 center on the Colorado basketball team, will miss four to six weeks with a right foot stress fracture, the team said Thursday. The team may designate Van Burck a redshirt freshman. That decision will be made this weekend, the team said. | |||||||
