Arizona State's search for a football coach has found its way to Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow. A source confirmed Wednesday ASU has contacted Chow.

Rose Bowl officials have not ruled out Notre Dame for the Jan. 1 game, although the Irish still appear destined for the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 3. There have been rumblings that ABC, which broadcasts the Rose Bowl, is pushing for Notre Dame. ESPN/ABC spokesman Michael Humes denied such speculation.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart talks to his college coach, USC's Pete Carroll, often, and it wouldn't surprise Leinart if Carroll made the jump to the NFL. The Cardinals reportedly are interested in hiring Carroll should Dennis Green be fired. Carroll, according to sources, is intrigued with the Cardinals job.

UCLA Coach Karl Dorrell chose Patrick Cowan over Ben Olson to start at quarterback against USC. The Trojans are prepared for both quarterbacks, according to cornerback Terrell Thomas.

Current Rutgers coach Greg Schiano is widely considered the No. 1 choice for the Miami head-coaching position. Most believe UM will contact Schiano after Rutgers plays West Virginia on Saturday.

For the first time since Miami football coach Larry Coker was fired last Friday, athletic director Paul Dee mentioned the name of a top candidate to replace Coker, defensive coordinator Randy Shannon.

Texas freshman quarterback Jevan Snead has asked for a release from his scholarship in order to transfer, a source close to Snead said Wednesday. The source said TCU was a leading candidate to land Snead. Snead's availability for Texas' bowl game could be in question because Snead wants to enroll at a new school in January, the source said.

Bill Cowher might ultimately go to North Carolina, but he won't be going to North Carolina State. He made that clear yesterday after the university's board of trustees chairman said the board would be foolish not to try to find out if the Steelers' coach were interested in returning to his alma mater to fill its vacancy.

Don't rule out a coach like Oregon State's Mike Riley for Alabama. Riley, a former Alabama player, turned down the job in 2002 and some Alabama fans have not forgiven him for that.
