KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (Reuters) -- Japan's Gamba Osaka equaled the tournament record when it thrashed Vietnam's Da Nang 15-0 at home in their Asian Champions League Group E match on Wednesday.

Beaten 3-2 by Korea's Chonbuk Motors two weeks ago, the J.League champions revived their playoff hopes with Brazilian Magno Alves scoring five goals and compatriot Fernandinho helping himself to four.

Gamba scored nine second-half goals, matching Korean side Seongnam Ilhwa's 15-0 thumping of Indonesia's Persik Kediri in 2004.

Substitute Masafumi Maeda scored two while Ryuji Bando, Tsuneyasu Miyamoto, Akihiro Ienaga and Yasuhito Endo, who started the flood with a seventh-minute penalty, had a goal each.

China's Dalian leads the group with two wins after its 1-0 home victory over Chonbuk, Zou Jie scoring the winner in the 40th minute.

Al Ain, the 2004 champion from United Arab Emirates, was held to a 1-1 draw away by Uzbekistan's Mash'al in a Group B match in Karshi.

Shuhratbek Mirholdirshaev scored in the final minute to cancel out Ibrahim Diaky's 15th-minute opener for last year's runners-up. Both teams have one win and one draw from two matches.

There was a surprise setback for experienced Iranian striker Ali Daei and his Saba Battery team. They fell 2-1 at home to Syria's Al Karama in a Group C encounter.

Although Daei gave the favorites from Tehran the lead after 16 minutes, Al Karama fought back through Jehad Al Hussein in the 63rd minute with Mohamad Al Hamwi snatching the winner in the final seconds.

It was Al Karama's second successive shock win. It beat UAE champions Al Wahda earlier this month.

Syria enjoyed a successful day with the country's double winners, Al Ittihad, holding another Iranian team, Foolad, to a goalless draw in their Al Hamdania Stadium in a Group A game.
