SANTIAGO, Chile (Reuters) -- Mexican outsider Pachuca came from behind to beat Colo Colo 2-1 away and win the Copa Sudamericana, the region's equivalent of the UEFA Cup, on Wednesday. Pachuca, Mexico's oldest club, silenced a 60,000 crowd at the Estadio Nacional as it won the final 3-2 on aggregate to become the first Mexican team to win a South American club competition. Mexican teams have taken part as guests in South American tournaments since the mid 1990s. Colo Colo's 1-1 draw in Mexico two weeks ago and its free-scoring form had made it a hot favorite. But prodigy Matias Fernandez never got into his majestic stride and was upstaged by Pachuca's speedy Argentine winger Damian Alvarez, who changed the complexion of the game after coming on as a halftime substitute. Colo Colo, which won the Libertadores Cup in 1991 to become the only Chilean side to win an international club tournament, appeared to have one hand on the trophy when it went ahead in the 35th minute. Teenage striker Alexis Sanchez beat two defenders and slipped the ball to Humberto Suazo, who held off his marker and scored with a shot into the corner for his 10th goal of the tournament. Pachuca leveled eight minutes after halftime when Carlos Rodriguez's long cross from the left found Gabriel Caballero unmarked at the far post and the Argentine, despite being off-balance, side-footed the ball home. The winner came 20 minutes later, the move starting with a Colo Colo corner. Pachuca won the ball and broke quickly out of defense with Alvarez beating three players to set up the counter-attack. Andres Chitiva continued the move as he raced down the left and found Christian Gimenez, who scored with a low shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area. Chitiva was sent off two minutes later after clashing with Colo Colo striker Gonzalo Fierro, who was also dismissed. Copyright 2006 Reuters Limited. All rights reserved. | |||||||
