Eau de HumanityWhat if more athletes had their own colognes?Posted: Wednesday August 2, 2006 2:24PM; Updated: Friday August 4, 2006 4:17PM
In case you missed the announcement Tuesday, Derek Jeter has teamed up with Avon to create a new cologne for men. That is, for men who won't be too embarrassed to answer the question, "what's that you're wearing" by saying, "Derek Jeter." Called "Driven" (as in, driven home by an A-Rod homer in the eighth inning of an 11-3 game) the fragrance is, says the press release, a blend of chilled grapefruit, clean oak moss, and spice. Funny, I always thought of Jeter as smelling more of room-temperature grapefruit and maple moss. Starting in November when the cologne hits store shelves, countless men throughout the New York area will be spraying on a little Driven before taking that special someone out for an anniversary dinner at The Olive Garden. Of course, Jeter is hardly the first professional athlete to sell his smell. NASCAR already has its Daytona 500 cologne, and Michael Jordan's cologne was, well, if nothing else it gave birth to the hysterical Snickers commercial that featured former Washington Bullets center Gheorghe Muresan selling his fictional namesake fragrance. Tired of being beaten to the punch on these things, I've decided to start my own sports fragrance company, and I've already signed up several prominent athletes to market their own signature fragrances. I know what you're thinking: athletes already have their own fragrances -- that's why they take showers after games. But if Jeter's cologne doesn't have you convinced, perhaps my new company, Smells Like Team Spirit, can make a believer out of you. Just take a look at this sampling of our very exciting product line: Escape (Bobby Abreu): One dash will have you feeling like you're being rescued from a sinking ship. Just spray it on and you'll be instantly transported-to a contender. Stripped (Justin Gatlin). This sensuous new fragrance is made mostly from massage oils.
