Big-name captains won't make Prez Cup interesting

Jack Nicklaus is back. So is Gary Player. For the third consecutive Presidents Cup, the two legends will square off as captains of the U.S. and International teams, respectively.

Pitting Nicklaus against Player -- the announcement was made Wednesday to massive amounts of shrugged shoulders and deaf ears -- is supposed to get you excited about an event that remains the unwanted stepsister to the more enticing Ryder Cup.

Sorry, it's not happening for me. I suspect I'm not alone. Seriously, does anybody really care about the Presidents Cup? I realize the event has had its moments, and yes, there was a certain amount of drama last year. But traditionally, it's a snoozer that its participants do not lose sleep over ... and its nonparticipants gladly take the week off.

Yet to its credit, the PGA Tour remains intent on giving us the hard sell. Such was the case Wednesday, with Tour commissioner Tim Finchem insisting that the outcry of support for Nicklaus convinced him to bring back the Golden Bear for another spin in the captain's cart.

"The players lobbied hard to bring Nicklaus back," Finchem said in making the announcement at Muirfield Village prior to the first round of the Memorial. "We couldn't be more pleased to have these two back and connected with the game."

Well, so much for all those farewell tears we shed last year at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club for Nicklaus. So much for that great send-off, with Nicklaus going out with a win when Chris DiMarco holed a 15-foot birdie putt to seal the Americans' win.

Oh, and speaking of final putts ...
