Keep an eye on ...
WR Tim Hawthorne. During 11-on-11 drills the freshman torched a defensive back, prompting former Tigers safety Junior Rosegreen, who was watching from the sideline, to yell out to senior receiver Courtney Taylor, "Hey, who's No. 13?"
"Hawthorne," Taylor said, "and he's faster than they say he is." Don't be surprised if Hawthorne is the team's No. 2 wideout when the season opens.
"He kind of reminds me of Michael Irvin, who I coached at Miami," Tuberville said. "He's got the height. He's a bulky receiver that can run. I think the sky will be the limit for him, but he's got a lot to learn."
DT Josh Thompson. This 6-foot, 302-pound bowling ball of a junior is one of the team's strongest players. During position drills Thompson continually gave teammates fits when they were working on double teams. With Muschamp showing both 3-4 and 4-3 defensive sets, Thompson, a first-time starter, will take center stage in the 3-4 at nose guard.
"Josh is one of our biggest leaders on defense and he's a junior," Herring said. "His motor never quits running. He's been causing havoc at two-a-days, and I have confidence that he can do the same thing this season."
The Tigers' kickers saved the team from running, as Matt Clark, Zach Kutch and John Vaughn went 3 for 3 from 45 yards to end practice. If the trio hits 2 of 3 from that distance, the team doesn't have to run six 60-yard sprints to close out the practice. "It puts a little pressure on 'em," Cox said.... As laid-back as Tuberville is, wide receivers coach Greg Knox is anything but, spitting out orders at a machine-gun pace.... Rosegreen noted that junior wide receiver Prechae Rodriguez looked "like a tree out there." But the 6-4 Rodriguez shot back, claiming he'd added muscle, going from 195 to 206 pounds.... Nobody jaws more than Taylor, Jonathan Wilhite and brothersKenny and David Irons. "Those are the guys you have to worry about," Cox said.... The Tigers have switched from Russell Athletics to Under Armour gear this season, but it won't change the team's uniforms in any way.... Tuberville hitched a ride with his boys at the end of practice, jumping onto a bench on the back of the orange golf cart.
