Hogs heaven (cont.)Posted: Friday November 10, 2006 1:13PM; Updated: Saturday November 11, 2006 12:22PM Inside the scouting reportHow do you prepare for Arkansas' run-heavy offense? Here's what the defensive coordinator of one of the Razorbacks' opponents had to say:
"There's not a lot of secrets when it comes to them. They're going to line up and they're going to run it right at you. They're going to play-action you and they're going to throw the ball to Monk. It's not like they're trying to fool anybody. "I think you have to have the type of athletes up front to control the line of scrimmage and you have to be disciplined in the way you sit in run support because the types of runs that they run aren't the types of things you see everyday. You see a lot of counters. You see power, but you see a lot of counters. A lot of the stuff they do, when it bounces to the outside, a lot of times you say, 'We'd like to keep them going east and west and bounce outside.' But about the time you do that, they outrun you. "About the only thing we did was intercept a couple of balls early, but right now it seems like they're going to play Dick as opposed to Mustain and Dick's just a little more experienced." The pickThe only question that really matters: Can the Vols slow down McFadden and the Razorbacks ground game? In a word: no. The Hogs, who must win two of their last three to win the SEC West, will take a step closer to the conference title game. Arkansas by six.
So starts the Trojans' three-game gauntlet of Oregon, Cal and Notre Dame. Early on, the Ducks looked to be as big a test as the Bears or Irish, but Oregon has struggled on the road (losing its last two games away from Eugene by double digits). But don't completely count out Oregon. In fact, there's one big concern if you're a USC backer: The Trojans have had trouble under Pete Carroll with mobile quarterbacks (Notre Dame's Carlyle Holiday, K-State's Ell Roberson, Cal's Reggie Robertson and, most famously, Texas' Vince Young). Mobile QBs have delivered half of Carroll's 10 losses in Troy. The pickOregon goes to Los Angeles with the Pac-10's best pass defense, but they haven't had to deal with a pair of weapons like USC wide receivers Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith. The Trojans' passing game seems to be coming together at just the right time -- coming off outings of 406 and 247 yards -- and that's bad news for the Ducks. USC by 10.
