NFL Power Rankings
Rank LW Team
22 They say that DE Aaron Smith was in tears before the team took the field against the Saints. Well, he wasn't the only one. Scott Green let the first game I was taping, Cincy-SD, run so long (3:32) that I realized the I'd probably lose most of the first quarter of Steelers-Saints. Which meant I could forget the beautiful chart I had prepared for this one. Just tear it up, down the toilet it goes, and sit back for some, ugh, recreational viewing.
19 Bledsoe goes, replaced by Romo in Dallas. Seems like Bledsoe existed about a year ago, doesn't it? But before that, Leinart had replaced Warner in Arizona. It seems hard to even remember Warner running the team down there. And now it's Campbell for Brunell in Washington. And how long will it take poor Mark before he goes tip-toeing out of our consciousness?
20 Freeney sacked Losman to back the Bills up six yards and make the field goal just difficult enough to be missable. Could have won the game and beaten the Colts. And who was it that couldn't keep the NFL's speediest pass rusher out and prevent the sack? Robert Royal, a journeyman TE. Why? Why? Why? I just can't take this much farther.
24 They're playing themselves out of the Brady Quinn Bowl? The QB position is as tangled as I can ever remember it down there. You know about Nos. 1 and 2, but I'm starting to hear things about Cleo Lemon. Check with me later on this. Right now he just sounds like someone out of a lifesaver package.
25 Wow, didja see them stats? I don't remember ever seeing the contrast of 44 carries for 198 yards set off against 14 completed passes. And I go back to the days of all the great runners ... Joe the Jet and Big Chief Norm and Johnny Strike and J.D. Smith and The King and John Henry ... oh me, oh my, folks.
26 Sleeper name for you. Third-year strong safety Sean Jones. Had his fifth interception (same as Champ Bailey) against Atlanta. Nearly had a sixth. Playing like a dream. You heard it here first.
28 Odd to find this much quality this far down. I mean these teams can and do beat good teams. Texans kind of intrigue me. Haven't seen enough of their games. Sent away to the club for game films. Club very kind in obliging. When I can find the space, I'll have a little work up for you on what I found.
27 Well, say what you want, they beat Atlanta by 16 points. That's two TDs and a safety. Or two and two safeties if you don't kick the extra points. Or two and ... when is the Redhead coming back, anyway? I get stir crazy here by myself.
29 Two lead notes from our Oakland stringer -- QB Andrew Walter criticizes offensive coordinator Tom Walsh: Those sheets were never laundered. And the coffee never came up for breakfast. And where did you get those donuts? I apologize. This is the ultimate cheap shot. Walsh ran a bed and breakfast in Idaho before he joined the team. Actually Walter criticized him for not calling enough quick-developing pass plays. Note No. 2 -- Randy Moss has become more of a possession receiver. Yeah, and what he's possessing are those little pictures of Grant and Franklin with all the zeroes next to them.
30 ESPN's Ron Jaworski, on one of his chalk talks I so dearly love, said that of all the first year QBs, he thinks Bruce Gradkowski does things of which the others are not capable. Well, I'd love to believe him, but gosh, where are all these bad stats coming from?
31 Watching all the preview stuff on Tennessee-Baltimore really brought home to me what a truly awful way the Titans had treated Steve McNair. Especially bothersome was the fact that all the Titans people copped out about it. No one actually came forward and said, yeah, it was my decision ... guess I was too harsh. It's like seeing a murder committed and never seeing the perpetrator found.
32 Well, Matt Leinart, what's you rookie season been like? Like an earning experience.
