Two majors down, two to go. Looks like it's time for the Halfway House Awards:

Best meltdown by a guy we didn't think still had it in him: You thought Colin Montgomerie wasn't going to be a factor in a major championship ever again? Hah. You thought wrong. You thought Monty might finally win a major? Hah. You thought wrong again.

Best shot off a tent: Phil Mickelson, 72nd hole at Winged Foot.

Worst time to hit a tent: Phil MIckelson, 72nd hole at Winged Foot.

Worst shot after a tent shot: Phil Mickelson, 72nd hole at Winged Foot.

Best player who hasn't won a U.S. Open: Sam Snead. (What, you thought it was Mickelson again?)

PGA Tour All-Star starting foursome: Mickelson (duh -- two wins, including the Masters, along with that runner-up finish at the Open); Geoff Ogilvy (two impressive wins -- the Open and the Match play); Tiger Woods (three wins, including a Euro Tour de force in Dubai, despite limited playing schedule); Jim Furyk (one win, one second and two thirds).

Biggest mismatch since Dwyane Wade versus anybody: Mickelson versus the field in Atlanta, where he backed off the gas pedal on Sunday and still won by 13.

Best comeback: Golf carts on the Champions Tour (and with them, apparently, Chi Chi Rodriguez).

Worst toothbrush-related injury: Furyk had to pull out of the Barclay's Classic because he strained his back while brushing his teeth. Me, I still say he hurt it flying the space shuttle.

Best comeback you haven't noticed: David Duval is playing some pretty good golf these days, even though it isn't always reflected in his scores, although he did finish tied for 16th at the U.S. Open. He's back to being a solid, competitive Tour player. Just forget that five-putt at the Memorial Tournament. And if you're looking for a super-sleeper pick for the British Open ...

Best freak show: Bubba Watson, whose mammoth drives are, well, sick. Honorable mention: J.B. Holmes, the Kentucky alum who won in Phoenix and isn't going to be a one-hit wonder.

Worst idea: If you've seen Golf Magazine's "Let's get John Daly on the Ryder Cup team" drive, an idea that looks worse by the month, you're probably asking yourself why? Daly isn't in the top 150 on the money list this year, he's withdrawn from his last three events and he's a proven quitter. Besides, does the Ryder Cup team have a smoking section in the team headquarters at the K Club?
