Steve Smith, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Clinton Portis have caused much consternation for fantasy owners the first couple of weeks because of their injuries that kept them out of the lineup or limited their numbers. Well, all three of them were completely healthy for the first time this season, and all three put up great fantasy stats.
Smith was the biggest question mark because of his nagging hamstring injury, but he came through with a 100-yard game to beat the rival Bucs. It looks like the hamstring is just fine. Portis, who did play in the season opener and even scored a touchdown, got his first start of the year and had his way with a Texans defense that hasn't stopped anyone this year. Finally, Houshmandzadeh returned from a heel injury and scored twice in his season debut, helping Carson Palmer overcome six sacks to beat the Steelers.
Meanwhile, Deion Branch made his Seahawks debut and somehow Matt Hasselbeck turned into Tom Brady -- that is throwing to ball to anyone and everyone on the roster. Branch finished with just two catches for 23 yards, but Darrell Jackson had two scores, while Nate Burleson, Bobby Engram and Will Heller all had one as well.
Sometimes a little patience is necessary in fantasy football, even if the weeks are limited. But now that these guys appear to be healthy, your fantasy team could be in good shape if you've been waiting for them to turn your fortunes around.
Stud of the Week
Brian Westbrook, Eagles (8 carries, 117 yards, 2 TDs; 4 catches, 47 yards, 1 TD): With Donte Stallworth a surprise scratch, someone had to pick up the slack in the offense, and this time it came from Westbrook, who turned in a career-high 71-yard TD run as part of a huge three-score day. As long as Donovan McNabb is still around, the Eagles offense seems to put up big stats. And with the Packers in town next week, there will be more big points to go around.
