Sunday's Best: Week 15Tomlinson stars again in relatively lackluster weekPosted: Monday December 18, 2006 12:06AM; Updated: Monday December 18, 2006 12:21AM
At this point in the season, you hope for a handful of big performances to carry your team through the fantasy playoffs. And with a number of favorable matchups heading into the week, you figured you could build up some big points. Instead, thanks to a bunch of relatively weak fantasy performances across the board (just look at all the duds this week), it once again came down to the usual suspects at running back to save the day. (At least until the potential avalanche of fantasy points comes on Monday night between the Colts and Bengals.) And at least you got production from some of the stud running backs. It was a rather disappointing week for top-flight quarterbacks, save for the ever inconsistent but still exciting Michael Vick. With the quarterbacks struggling, it was also a bad day for wideouts, further proving why running backs should be the foundation for your fantasy team. Stud of the WeekLaDainian Tomlinson, RB, Chargers (25 carries, 199 yards, 2 TDs; 1 catch, 5 yards): A no-brainer once again for the runaway fantasy MVP. When you needed him to produce, he did, turning in his eighth straight game with at least two touchdowns. He could've broken 200 yards but seemed to be dealing with a jaw problem late in the game. And he also easily beat Larry Johnson (199 rushing yards and two TDs-83 yards and no scores). Other studs Quarterback Running Back Wide Receiver/Tight End Others Dud of the WeekDrew Brees, QB, Saints (21-38, 207 yards, 1 INT; 1 carry, 3 yards): Lots of quarterbacks had far worse stats that Brees. However, New Orleans' main man had put up huge stats almost every week to get many teams this far in the fantasy playoffs. But Washington's maligned pass defense gave him plenty of trouble at just the wrong time for fantasy owners. Other duds Waiver Wire Wonder of the WeekTim Rattay, QB, Buccaneers (20-35, 268 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT): He replaced Bruce Gradkowski midgame last week and then again this week. This time, Rattay led a furious Tampa Bay comeback from 21 points against the Bears, no less, down to force overtime before Chicago won out. Still, Rattay may have played himself into a starting gig next week in a favorable matchup against the Browns. Other surprises
