Sunday's Best: Week 17Barber's record goodbye part of high-scoring finalePosted: Sunday December 31, 2006 9:55PM; Updated: Sunday December 31, 2006 11:15PM
The final weekend of the regular season is always a strange one for fantasy owners. Many leagues (especially head-to-head ones) are done for the season, but you're still watching your players put up some stats -- often one week to late to help you out. Yet there are other cases were some teams give their stars only token action to rest up for the playoffs, which is why many leagues stop after Week 16 in the first place. So we got a little bit of everything in this final week. Partly because of the potential for playoff berths, some players just kept on doing what they had been doing all season (Larry Johnson, Steven Jackson). There were many things at stake for Tiki Barber and the Giants, so it was about time he did something huge -- much to the chagrin of fantasy owners who have finished for the season. There were teams done for the year testing out a player for the future at the expense of a somewhat established veteran (see the Texans playing Chris Taylor at Ron Dayne's expense). And then there were the Saints, who gave Drew Brees and Reggie Bush a token series (and deactivating Deuce McAllister) before letting them rest up for the playoffs. Here are the top performers and biggest duds from the final week of the regular season. Check back on Tuesday for my picks of the best, worst and in between from the 2006 season. Co-Studs of the WeekTiki Barber, RB, Giants (23 carries, 234 yards, 3 TDs; 3 catches, 24 yards): The most notable part of Barber's finale -- a single-game best and team-record 234 yards -- is that he more than doubled his touchdown output for this season. The yards are nice -- he did break Jim Brown's record for most yards in his final season -- but two TDs until the final week of the season was a bit of a bummer for many fantasy owners. Steven Jackson, RB, Rams (25 carries, 142 yards, 3 TDs; 2 catches, 24 yards, 1 TD): It's been an amazing final two-week stretch for Jackson, as he's gone for 418 total yards and six TDs in Weeks 16 and 17, even with St. Louis clinging to just faint playoff hopes at that point. While LaDainian Tomlinson will still be the No. 1 overall pick in most drafts next year, Jackson is making a huge push to be No. 2. Other studs Quarterback Running Back Wide Receiver/Tight End Others Dud of the WeekRex Grossman, QB, Bears (2-12, 33 yards, 3 INTs, 1 lost fumble): He only played one half, but he made it a memorable one for the wrong reasons as he replicated some of his most awful games of the season. The game didn't mean much for the standings, but it does make Chicago fans nervous for the playoffs. Other duds Waiver Wire Wonder of the WeekA.J. Feeley, QB, Eagles (22-33, 321 yards, 3 TDs): Some thought he should've been the starting quarterback when Donovan McNabb went down. Instead, Jeff Garcia took over and led Philly to a surprise NFC East title. But when that was clinched early in the game, Feeley came in and had a huge game against a Falcons already eliminated. Obviously you can't read much into it, but it's still a nice outing. Other surprises Calling Off the Dogs
